BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana University Athletics is monitoring the threat of inclement weather, and has made preparations and drafted procedures to follow in case of a weather emergency for this Saturday's football season opener against Indiana State. As with all athletic events, IU Athletics' primary concern is the safety of the participants and fans. IU Athletics has worked with representatives from IUPD, fire, ambulance, ESG Security, and IU Emergency Management to create a Command Center at Memorial Stadium to monitor the situation. If necessary, updates will be provided to local media outlets and via social media to inform fans of any change in the status of the game. Fans in the stands or in tailgate areas will also be notified of status changes via the Memorial Stadium public address system, bullhorns, and by IUPD with the speakers on their patrol cars.

"We have met extensively to prepare for possible inclement weather," said Indiana University Vice President and Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Fred Glass. "We are excited for our season opener, but we have taken several steps to make sure fans, players, and staff will be safe in case of a severe weather situation."

Below are some inclement weather policies and procedures that fans should be aware of:

-The IU Athletics Command Center in Memorial Stadium will be staffed. Representatives from IUPD, fire, ambulance, ESG, IU Athletics Event Services, and IU Emergency Management will be on-hand to monitor the situation.

-Announcements will be made to the general public when there is severe weather within a 30 mile radius to inform fans that bad weather is in the area.

    - If severe weather is within a 20 mile radius, IU Athletics will suspend all pre-game field activities. Event Services and ESG Security will direct patrons to shelter on the east and west concourses, Assembly Hall, Gladstein Fieldhouse, or to return to their vehicles. Players and coaches will be directed to evacuate the field.

-Those tailgating in the Red Lot will be informed of severe weather by ESG personnel with bullhorns and/or by IUPD with the speakers of their patrol cars.

-Students who planned on walking home from the game are encouraged to take shelter in these venues in case of an emergency.

-If there is heavy rain, some parking lots may be closed and fans will be redirected to other lots.
