Banas Signs NLI

Bloomington, Ind. -- Indiana University head volleyball coach Katie Weismiller today announced that Christine Banas has signed a National Letter-of-Intent to attend Indiana University. A product of Lake Central High School in St. John, Ind., where she played for head coach Karen Arehart, Banas will enroll at IU this fall. She is expected to be an outside hitter for the Hoosiers.
"In signing Christine, we are adding another great athlete to our roster," said Weismiller. "She is a quick jumper and has a quick arm, two traits that will afford her the opportunity to be an offensive threat in the Big Ten early in her career. She will make our team even more athletic and we are certainly looking forward to having the opportunity to work with her."
As a senior in 2002, the six-foot-tall Banas led Lake Central to a 29-8 record, which included a sectional championship and a regional runner-up finish. She was recognized as a first-team all-area selection by both the Hammond Times and Gary Post-Tribune.
"I decided to attend Indiana because it is a great school academically," said Banas. "It also has a beautiful campus with a strong volleyball program, one that features a great coaching staff and training facilities. It will provide me with a wonderful opportunity to succeed."
In addition to her all-area recognition, Banas was also a volleyball letterwinner on three occasions and was recognized as Lake Central's Most Valuable Player and Best Offensive Player.
Banas, who played as a middle hitter and defensive specialist as a senior in 2002, proved to be very versatile for the Indians throughout her career as she played rightside hitter on the varsity as a sophomore and junior, after playing leftside as a member of the junior varsity squad as a freshman.
At the club level, Banas played for the Dunes Volleyball Club under the direction of head coach Mark Ciesielski. Five of her club teammates signed Division I Letters-of-Intent.
Banas, who was born on November 29, 1984 in Harvey, Ill., is the daughter of Gloria and Joe Banas.
