Strong Second Half Lifts Hoosiers at Princeton, 9-8

PRINCETON, N.J. - The No. 17 Indiana Hoosiers (5-8) women's water polo team scored six second half goals, including three from Lauren Wyckoff in the fourth period to hold off Princeton, 9-8, and win their third consecutive game. Wyckoff came through with a backhand score with 46 seconds remaining to lift the Hoosiers.

"After some early mistakes we regrouped and put together a solid second half," said Indiana head coach Barry King. "We need to take that second half play and carry it over for the rest of the weekend."

Along with Wyckoff's trio of goals, Nicole Redder had a pair for the Hoosiers, while Kara Butler, Kelsey Campbell, Shae Fournier, and Jakie Köhli each netted one. Redder's pair of goals moved her into fourth on the IU all-time scoring list.

Cassie Wyckoff grabbed six saves in the cage and picked up one steal.

Princeton jumped out to the early two-goal lead after the opening five minutes of play, including one on a power play opportunity.

The Hoosiers came alive late in the quarter after a series of key plays from Butler and Campbell off of the Indiana bench. Butler earned a five-meter penalty with 2:45 left in the first and Campbell rifled it into the net to get the Hoosiers on the board.

Indiana had an important six-on-four stop late in the quarter, which included field blocks from Katie Black and Hanna Eimstad. The Hoosiers followed with a post-up goal from Butler to make it a 2-2 tie heading into the second.

Redder opened up the second quarter scoring with a long-range goal after an assist by Köhli at the 5:38 mark.

Princeton then reeled off three straight goals to grab a 5-3 lead at the break.

Redder then notched her sixth multi-goal game of the 2011 season with a power play score after the assist from Meghan Lappan. A minute later, Lappan dished out another helper, this time to fellow freshman Shae Fournier for the equalizer.

The Tigers regained the lead on a goal with 5:10 left in the third period.

Köhli answered for the Hoosiers by earning an exclusion, taking a Redder pass, and firing a shot past the Princeton goalkeeper to make it 6-6.

Wyckoff ignited a Hoosier rally in the final quarter, scoring two goals in a span of 25 seconds to give Indiana an 8-6 lead with six minutes to play.

The Tigers responded with a two-goal run of their own to knot things up with under a minute to play.

Wyckoff wrapped up a stellar fourth quarter with a clutch backhand score with 46 seconds remaining, giving the senior her second three-goal performance of the year.

The Hoosiers came up with one final defensive stop and ran the clock to wrap up the victory.
