BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana returns to Bloomington this weekend looking to snap a two-game losing streak in a Homecoming matchup against Rutgers.
Players and members of the Hoosiers (4-2, 0-2 Big Ten East) coaching staff met with the media Monday for the team's weekly press conference heading into Saturday's 3:30 p.m. kickoff against the Scarlet Knights (2-3, 0-2 Big Ten East).
IUHoosiers.com was there and complied five quotes and storylines to follow as the Hoosiers search for their first Big Ten win of the season.
Redshirt junior receiver Ricky Jones: "You do get a different feeling with Homecoming because you have former players, you have the different dudes coming back that have graduated. But my main focus is the game. I'm here to win the game."
Former players and alumni alike are expected to file into Bloomington this weekend for the annual Homecoming game, adding a bit of extra excitement to the atmosphere at Memorial Stadium.
While Jones said he appreciates the added buzz around campus, he conceded that he does his best to ignore it. Football is his job, and he doesn't want anything getting in his or his teammate's way.
Head coach Kevin Wilson: "To me, we've just got to score points. We're protecting the football. We're not trying to play boring football. We're not trying to be conservative. We threw as many passes as we ran the other day. We've just got to get the ball in the end zone. We've got to create some things."
Wilson, regarded by peers as one of the top offensive minds in football, wants to see more out of his offense after scoring just seven points in a loss to Penn State.
The Hoosiers are fourth in the Big Ten in scoring, averaging 31.2 points per game, despite scoring 34 total points the last two weekends.
Moving the ball hasn't necessarily been the issue, Wilson said. Indiana got past the 50-yard line five times against Penn State, but from there, the Hoosiers only managed one touchdown. Wilson said the key is taking advantage of the times Indiana gets into opposing territory by walking out with points.
Fifth-year senior bandit Zack Shaw: "Nick Mangieri and I are both playing really well right now, and I think we're just feeding off each other. When one sees the other playing good, I think that just motivates us. We're both playing at a high level. I just hope we keep it up."
To say Shaw and Mangieri, a senior defensive end, are playing well now may be an understatement.
The two combined for four sacks at Penn State and have been consistently breaking into opposing team's backfields to rattle the quarterback. Mangieri leads the Hoosiers with seven sacks through six games. Shaw is second on the team with three.
Mangieri and Shaw have been two of Indiana's most consistent players all season. Wilson said Mangieri scored a "winning grade" in five of the six games thus far. Shaw has had a winning grade in three of the six.
Mangieri: "I know it sounds simple, but we just need to be more consistent as a defense. We've done a lot of things well. I just think we need to do those things more often and not let mistakes get in the way."
Indiana's defense gave up 29 points to Penn State, in part, because of allowing too many "big plays," Mangieri said. He included penalties in that same category.
The Hoosier defense has kept Indiana within striking distance in practically every game this season. It's proven to be a strength when aggressive, having forced 12 turnovers, but Mangieri and his teammates on the defensive side of the ball are still working to sharpen up correctable mistakes.
Sophomore running back Devine Redding: "As far as where we want to be, I don't think we're close. We've just got to keep going and find our rhythm."
This week marks the halfway point in the 12-game season for Indiana. After the first half, the Hoosiers stand with four wins.
But having said that, Redding is just one of a handful of players who have said Indiana still hasn't reached its potential. With a guaranteed six weeks of play left ahead, IU is slowly beginning to run out of time in playing its best football.
This week may be as good as any to start.
