BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana will look to refocus this week against Penn State after suffering its first loss of the season at home to Ohio State in week five.
Indiana football players and members of the coaching staff met with the media Monday for the team's weekly press conference leading into Saturday's noon kickoff against Penn State (4-1, 1-0) to discuss the Nittany Lions and where the Hoosiers (4-1, 0-1) stand five games in.
IUHoosiers.com was there and complied five quotes and storylines to follow as the Hoosiers look for their first Big Ten win of the season.
Redshirt junior offensive lineman Dan Feeney: "We definitely have to regroup, keep attacking this week and developing as a unit. Just polishing our skills because I think we showed that we're a tough team. We're locked in, and we want to win. Throughout this week, we're just going to keep hammering home, keep polishing and just keep doing what we do to improve."
The Hoosiers are in unchartered territory this week. For the first time all season, they'll look to bounce back from a loss this weekend at Penn State.
While he stressed the importance of regrouping, Feeney said it's also important not to overreact to the first loss of the year. He said it's important to learn from it and move on, rather than let one bad week turn into two bad weeks.
Head coach Kevin Wilson: "Really appreciate our crowd last week. Our fans were awesome. They affected the game. Coach Hep (Terry Hoeppner) said years ago, 'Fans win games.' Those fans helped us. They helped us weather some storms. They stayed with us. We've got a team that will fight. Like to have our fan base start to have that little proud and fighting spirit with us, too."
Indiana football played in front of a sellout crowd for the first time in five seasons last weekend, and the fan support didn't go unnoticed.
Wilson and players expressed their appreciation for the 52,929 fans to file into Memorial Stadium. It marked a tie for the fourth-best crowd in program history.
Wilson said the fans' energy made a difference in Saturday's game. His challenge to the fan base is to keep it going in the remaining three home games.
Senior defensive end Nick Mangieri: "No doubt about it, this is definitely the best I've felt going out there every week. My confidence is at an all-time high. That's really the biggest thing in any sport you play. A lot of it's mental. When you're able to have confidence in what you're doing, it's going to show on the field and you're going to make plays."
Coming off a two-sack performance against Ohio State, Mangieri said he feels as comfortable as he's ever been in his time at Indiana. He's quietly strung together a few of the best games of his career and doesn't appear to be slowing down.
Through five games, Mangieri has five sacks and 24 total tackles. His five sacks account for half of his career total, and his 24 tackles put him well on his way to shattering his previous season-high in tackles, which he set last year with 37.
Offensive coordinator Kevin Johns: "We've spent a day in a half now watching (Penn State), and I don't see too many weaknesses right now in this defense. When you ask, 'What problems do they present?' Really, a lot."
For a second week in a row, Indiana is preparing to play one of the Big Ten's better defenses.
Penn State is allowing just 15.8 points per game, ranking No. 6 in the conference, but has excelled in forcing opponents to lose yards. The Nittany Lions rank No. 2 in the country in sacks, led by senior defensive end Carl Nassib, who has eight through five games.
Sophomore receiver Simmie Cobbs, Jr.: "We've got another chance to go on the road this week and remind people what we're all about."
For just the second time this season, Indiana will play away from the comforts of Memorial Stadium against a Penn State team that's had success at home this year.
The Nittany Lions improved to 4-0 inside Beaver Stadium with a victory against Army last weekend, marking the first time since the 2008 season they've had four-straight wins to open a home schedule. Penn State last went 5-0 at home to start a season in the same season.
