TEMPE, Ariz. - The Indiana women’s water polo team lost on Saturday morning to No. 15 Long Beach State, 9-8, in overtime. The Hoosiers took the lead at the start of the overtime periods, but the 49ers rallied with two unanswered goals to clinch the win at the end of overtime.
Summer Creighton and Kelly Matthews led the Hoosiers in scoring with two goals each. Shelby Taylor, Candyce Schroeder, Sarah Myers, and Colleen McNaught netted one goal apiece. In the assist category, it was Matthews and McNaught leading with two assists each, followed by Schroeder, Myers, and Rebecca Gerrity with one apiece.
Mary Campbell had yet another strong performance in the cage following her standout weekend at the Aztec Invite. Campbell had 8 saves, a couple of which came in the closing minutes of regulation and early in overtime.
Elsewhere on defense, Gerrity and Myers caused problems for the 49ers’ attack with three steals each. Summer Creighton got on the board with two steals, followed by Taylor with one.
The first half was tightly contested and heavily defensive. Taylor netted the only goal of the first quarter off of an assist from Gerrity. The 49ers equalized in the middle of the second quarter, but a scoop-and-score counterattack from Creighton gave Indiana a 2-1 lead entering half time.
Both teams opened up on the attack in the second half. Long Beach State tied the game on a counterattack, then McNaught found Matthews near the top to help Indiana regain the lead. The two teams traded goals for the remainder of the quarter, which ended in a 5-5 tie.
Long Beach State took the lead to open scoring for the fourth quarter. McNaught scored on a power play goal to tie the game, but the 49ers jumped ahead again two minutes later. Matthews tied the game for the Hoosiers a minute after Long Beach State took the lead, and the score hung at 7-7 through the end of regulation.
Indiana took a one-goal lead with 1:49 remaining in the first overtime period. But Long Beach State responded with two goals in the final 40 seconds of the period to take a 9-8 lead with just a five-minute period remaining. The 49ers held strong on defense, and prevented the Hoosiers from scoring another goal.
The Hoosiers (11-9, 1-0 CWPA) continue the ASU Invite this evening, in a non-conference contest against the Hartwick College Hawks. The last time these two teams met two weeks ago, Indiana won 15-9. The game will start at 6:00 pm ET. Follow the action on Twitter @IUWaterPolo.
