GWANGJU, South Korea — Indiana University swimming was well represented on the podium Monday night with Lindsay Vrooman and Lilly King winning silver medals for Team USA at the 2015 World University Games at the Gwangju Aquatics Center in Gwangju, South Korea.
Former IU All-American and Big Ten champion Vrooman was the first Hoosiers swimmer on the medals stand, taking second in the 1,500-meter freestyle with a time of 16:13.85. Vrooman chopped nearly 10 seconds off her personal best in the 1500 free, bettering her previous time of 16:22.71 set at the 2013 U.S. Open.
The veteran was followed by the rookie as incoming IU freshman King re-set the Indiana University record in the 100-meter breaststroke for the third time in two days, placing second in 1:06.93. King took off nearly two seconds between prelims and finals, posting a 1:08.44 in her first swim, followed by a 1:07.21 in the semifinals.
Indiana swimming is well represented at the 2015 World University Games. In addition to King and Vrooman, recent IU graduate Justine Ress is swimming backstroke for France at the Games, while junior Anze Tavcar represents his native Slovenia in the sprint freestyle events. Indiana head swimming coach Ray Looze is serving as head coach for Team USA at the Games.
Swimming competition, which began on July 4, will run through July 10.
