Vrooman Wins 800 Free at U.S. National Championships

SAN ANTONIO – Former Indiana All-American Lindsay Vrooman won her second title at the U.S. Swimming Phillips 66 National Championships, posting the top time in the 800-meter freestyle final. Her time of 8:28.13 was just 0.12 ahead of second place and set a new IU long course record in the process.
Incoming freshman Miranda Tucker also made a splash in the 200-meter breaststroke, setting a new IU record in her prelim heat (2:29.44) before breaking it again in the B final with a 2:27.71.
Also in the 200-meter breaststroke was another incoming freshman – Lilly King – who matched her previous IU record in her preliminary heat with a time of 2:30.65.
On the men's side of the 200-meter breaststroke, senior Tanner Kurz qualified for the B final with a time of 2:14.15 in the preliminary heats. Then in the B final, he went even faster and took third place in the race, touching the wall in 2:13.90.
Sophomore Cody Taylor registered a time of 2:19.27 in his 200-meter breaststroke prelim heat and graduate Mike Hurley came in with a time of 2:19.90 in the same event.
In the men's 4x100 meter medley relay, the IU team of junior Bob Glover, senior Tanner Kurz, junior Max Irwin and sophomore Blake Pieroni finished ninth after posting a time of 3:42.69.
Glover also competed in the 200-meter backstroke event and logged a time of 2:08.69. In addition to Glover, Ryan Gordon touched the wall in 2:03.36 and James Wells was just ahead of him at 2:03.11.
The lone IU representative in the 100-meter free was Grace Vertigans and her time of 57.93.
Up next for IU swimming and diving is the USA Diving Nationals, which start Tuesday, Aug. 11.
