SAN ANTONIO – At the 2015 Speedo Junior National Championships in San Antonio, the Hoosiers had a couple swimmers competing on Sunday, with one setting a new IU long course record twice.
The highlight of the day came from incoming freshman Miranda Tucker in the 200 breaststroke. In her preliminary heat, she posted a time of 2:29.72 to set a new IU long course record in the event and enter the finals as the top qualifier by almost two seconds.
Later, in the finals, Tucker lowered her IU record by over a second, touching the wall in 2:28.14, nearly three seconds ahead of second place. You can watch Tucker's record setting win in the finals by clicking here.
Earlier at Junior Nationals, Tucker took first place in the 100 breast, narrowly missing the meet record in the process.
In the 100-meter back prelims, Shelly Drozda registered a time of 1:05.68 while Ian Finnerty finished with a time of 1:55.36 in the 200-meter free prelims.
On Monday, Tucker is scheduled to be back in action with the 200 IM and 50 free while Drozda will also compete in the 200 IM. Finnerty is slated to compete in the men's 200 IM.
In Kazan, Russia, at the 2015 FINA World Championships, former IU standout Cody Miller was representing the United States in the 100-meter breaststroke on Sunday in Russia and nearly qualified for the finals. After his time of 59.97 in the prelims put him into the semifinals, he needed to finish in the top 8 to make the finals.
In his semifinals race, he improved his time to 59.86, but that left him in ninth place, just .11 behind eighth place and a spot in the finals.
Also racing in Kazan on Sunday was sophomore Ali Khalafalla, who is representing Egypt. He was the anchor leg of the 4x100 meter relay for Egypt, which finished 20th in a time of 3:20.59.
