FORT WAYNE, Ind. – In its final exhibition match before the start of the regular season, the 14th ranked Indiana men's soccer team posted a 2-0 win over Marquette. The game was played at the Heffner Soccer Complex and was part of the annual Shindigz National Soccer Festival.
Indiana opened the scoring in the 12th minute when Billy McConnell centered the ball into the box and Phil Fives was able to get his head on it and find the back of the net and give the Hoosiers a 1-0 lead.
The Hoosiers wasted little time trying to add to the lead when Tanner Thompson's throw-in skipped by the Marquette defender and put Ben Maurey in on goal in the 16th minute. But Maurey's shot trickled across the goal mouth and went wide.
Just four minutes later, Francesco Moore's curling shot from 20 yards out stayed just wide and the IU lead remained 1-0.
Marquette would get one of their better scoring chances of the match in the 22nd minute but the shot came from a sharp angle and ended up outside the right post. They would add a dangerous free kick opportunity in the 41st minute just outside the 18-yard box. However, Indiana was able to deny the chance as it was struck into the wall of IU defenders and then cleared away, allowing the teams to go to the locker room with IU in front, 1-0.
Early in the second half, in the 48th minute, Jeremiah Gutjahr found space along the left sideline and made it all the way to the endline where he then crossed the ball through the box and found Tim Mehl waiting. Mehl, the redshirt freshman, stuck the ball solidly and it found the back of the net inside the left post to put IU ahead, 2-0.
Indiana was not satisfied with the two goal lead and they were looking for more in the 50th minute. Again it was Mehl that was involved, this time it was his service into the box that had three IU players around but no one was able to get anything on it to find the back of the net and the lead remained 2-0.
Just a minute after that, Maurey was back at it again, using his 6-foot 5 frame to wall off the defender and get a clean look on goal, but his shot sailed just over the crossbar.
Marquette was able to get a couple shots from long range off in the closing minutes, but the IU defenders were up to the task to preserve the shutout.
The final stats showed nine shots for Marquette to seven for IU while both teams earned four corner kicks.
Indiana will open the regular season on Friday, Aug. 28 at home against St. John's with an 8:00 p.m. kickoff as part of the Adidas/IU Credit Union Classic. The other teams competing over the weekend are No. 13 Maryland and No. 4 Notre Dame. Tickets are available by visiting IUHoosiers.com.
