BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – In the finale of the 2015 Hoosier Classic, Indiana and SIU-Edwardsville battled to a scoreless draw on Sunday afternoon at Armstrong Stadium.
The Hoosiers' offense got off to a good start, earning three corners kicks in the first eight minutes of action. However, the Cougars were able to disrupt each opportunity and keep Indiana from getting a shot up.
After SIUE's Katye Skrivan recorded the first shot of the game in the 10th minute on a look that went left of Indiana goalkeeper Sarah Stone, sophomore Kayla Smith threatened to give the Hoosiers the lead after chasing down a ball headed by the SIUE defense. However, she had to take the shot off-balanced and it landed just to the right of the post.
"We've just got to fine tune the details in the final third," said Indiana head coach Amy Berbary. "It's easy to get down there, but when you're down there it takes precision to be able to put it in the back of the net."
Smith's shot would prove to be Indiana's only of the first period as the Hoosiers couldn't connect on another corner opportunity in the 37th minute.
Indiana put up four shots in the second half, matching SIUE's looks. Redshirt junior Kayleigh Steigerwalt got perhaps Indiana's best look at the back of the game in the 54th minute after recovering from a fall to fire the ball from 15 yards out. However, the ball just missed the far post to keep the game scoreless.
Both team's got one final shot off in the last three minutes of regulation, but the defense on each side prevailed to send the game to overtime.
SIUE's Skrivian, who totaled seven shots on the day, put one on goal in the 91st minute, but Stone came up once again for the save in the middle of the net. Skrivian's two shots were the only opportunities for either team in the first overtime period.
The Hoosiers earned two corner kicks in the final overtime period, including one with just five seconds left on the clock. However, Indiana was unable to threaten as the game ended in a draw.
Up next, Indiana travels to West Lafayette next weekend for the Boilermaker Challenge Cup. The Hoosiers will face Missouri on Friday afternoon and Baylor on Sunday.
"I think we had a couple of very good halves, so now we have to figure out how to put that together," said Coach Berbary. "In training, we have to continue to focus on being more precise in the final third and getting more shots on frame."
