BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Indiana Women's Soccer team wrapped up its non-conference schedule on Sunday against Ball State, battling the Cardinals to a 1-1 tie at Armstrong Stadium.
Indiana goalkeeper Sarah Stone turned in another impressive performance against the Cardinals, tying her season high of seven saves, keeping the Hoosiers in position the entire game. One of her more impressive sequences of the day came late in the first overtime period after a shot by Ball State's Chelsy Swackhamer went just high off the cross bar, Stone then recovered in time to save a look by Abbey Fiser to extend the game to a second overtime.
"I tried to stay as composed as possible," said Stone. "Those are the moments I live for and why I play the position that I play. I like that pressure so I just try to stay composed and keep my eye on the ball."
Stone was tested from the get-go as Ball State sent up four shots on goal in the first half of action, all saved by the redshirt senior.
On the other end of the field, Indiana registered four shots in the opening half, although none were on target. The Hoosiers' best look of the half came on a corner kick in the 23rd minute resulting in a blocked shot by Veronica Ellis and a high look off the foot of Annelie Leitner.
The Cardinals broke the stalemate in the 73rd minute after Swackhamer picked up the rebound off a Stone save to give Ball State a 1-0 lead.
However, the Hoosiers did not wait long to respond as Jessie Bujouves tied the game in the 84th minute after a pair of shots by Kayla Smith left the ball up for grabs. The senior then punched the ball into the upper right-hand corner on her second goal of the season.
"We didn't crumble," said Indiana head coach Berbary. "I thought we did a good job of keeping our head. We didn't go away from the game plan and that was actually the first time I've seen our team fight and scrap inside the penalty box to score that goal."
Kayleigh Steigerwalt looked to win the game for Indiana in the first overtime period on a shot in the 93rd minute of action, but Ball State goalkeeper Alyssa Heintschel picked up the save.
The second overtime included a pair of blocked shots by Maya Piper and Kailee Feinstein, but neither team put up a real threat to end the tie.
The Hoosiers open up Big Ten play on Friday night as they play host to Illinois before facing Northwestern on Sunday afternoon.
"I think tonight we showed a lot of grit," said Bujouves. "Obviously it was disappointing because we wanted to win. But, we tied it, still got a point and we're just looking forward and preparing for a big weekend."
