OLYMPIA FIELDS, Illinois – In one of the most elite fields in men's college golf, the Indiana men's golf team finished tied for 12th as a team with an overall score of 880 (296-293-291), the Hoosiers best team score at this event since 2010. The top individual finisher for the Hoosiers was sophomore Brendon Doyle, who finished tied for 31st.
"I think we can take a lot of positives from this tournament," Indiana head coach Mike Mayer said after Sunday's round. "This field is one of the best of the year in all of college golf, with a number of teams that made the NCAA Finals last year. But we got better each and every round and received production from everyone in the lineup, which is great to see. We know we have to keep on getting better and I know we will keep doing everything we can to get better each time out."
The field featured 12 teams either ranked in the Golf Coaches Association Preseason Top 25 or receiving votes. Baylor, who tied IU for 12th place is ranked No. 25 while the two teams that IU beat – UNLV and Texas Tech – were both receiving votes.
As he has all weekend, Doyle was steady throughout his round on Sunday. He posted seven pars and two bogeys on his first nine holes and then came in with three bogeys and one birdie for a score of 4-over par 74. For the tournament, he was 9-over par and tied for 31st individually, which is his second-best career finish. His total score of 219 for the tournament matches his career best, that he set last year at Talis Park (March 15-16, 2015).
Junior Keegan Vea had the next best overall score for the weekend at 221 (+11) after his final round 73 on Sunday, leaving him tied for 38th. It marks his second-best career 54-hole score after he had four bogeys and one birdie on Sunday.
Senior Max Kollin and freshman Jake Brown logged overall scores of 222 and 223, respectively. Kollin went out in 1-under par 33 on Sunday before he tallied three bogeys on his second nine to finish with a score of 72 and a tie for 43rd for the weekend.
Brown paced the Hoosiers with three birdies in his round Sunday as he matched Kollin with a 2-over par 72. His overall score of 223 put him in a tie for 50th on the individual leaderboard.
Andrew Havill, who led the Hoosiers last weekend at the Northern Intercollegiate, was not able to get on track in his final round and finished tied for 71st after recording an 80 in his third round to give him a overall score of 231.
Competing as an individual, sophomore Christian Fairbanks rebounded in his third round after struggling in round two. He carded a 5-over par 75 on Sunday to give him a total score of 23th and a tie for 74.
Indiana will play its third tournament in three weekends at the Windon Memorial at Lake Shore Country Club in Glencoe, Ill. The tournament starts Sept. 27 and wraps up the following day.
