MADISON, Wisconsin – In a close match from start to finish, the Indiana Women's Golf team came up just short in a 3-2 match play loss to Colorado at the East-West Match Play Challenge at University Ridge Golf Course in Wisconsin.
Senior Camille Chevalier had the most impressive performance of the day, posting a 7&6 win in her match thanks to four birdies in the 12 holes she played. Junior Ana Sanjuan recorded a 1-up win for the Hoosiers' other point in the match while Eva Domingo and Pear Siriko both suffered losses on the 18th hole in their matches.
Indiana will take on Big Ten foe Michigan in the third place match on Tuesday at University Ridge. The Wolverines lost by a score of 4-1 to Oregon on Monday.
Chevalier was ready from the start of her match against Brittany Fan, winning the first five holes after playing the holes in 3-under par including birdies on both par 3s. She would go on to add a birdie on the par 5 11th to take a 7-up lead and then closed out the 7&6 win on the 12th hole when she matched Fan's par.
Ana Sanjuan was a wire-to-wire winner over Allie Zech on Monday. Sanjuan won the first hole with a birdie then improved to a 2-up lead after a birdie on No. 6. The lead would get to 3-up on the 13th hole before Zech won holes 15 and 17 to cut it to a 1-up lead for Sanjuan heading to the last hole, where both players made par.
Eva Domingo took a tough 1-down loss to Alexis Keating in her semifinal match after Domingo held a 2-up lead with five holes to play. The freshman went 1-up after losing the fourth hole but rallied back to win the fifth hole and square the match. Keating came back to win the sixth hole before Domingo won the ninth hole with a par. Domingo took a 1-up lead after a birdie on No. 11 and then increased it to 2-up with a par on No. 12. From there, Keating fought back to win No. 14, 17 and 18 to pull out the win.
In one of the closest matches of the day, Indiana's Pear Siriko suffered a 1-up loss to Natalie Vivaldi. The largest lead that either player held all day was 1-up and the only time Vivaldi led was after winning the 18th hole. Siriko won the third hole to go ahead by a hole, but Vivaldi came back to win the next hole and square the match. With Siriko 1-up heading to 16, Vivaldi would go on to post eagle-par-birdie over the final three holes and hand the Hoosiers the 1-up loss.
In the fifth match, Indiana freshmen Erin Harper won the first hole to take the early lead. But that would be the extend of her lead on the day, as Ester Lee claimed the third hole with a par and then took the lead for good with a birdie on No. 5 en route to a 5&4 win over Harper.
Competing as an individual in the match play portion, junior Theresa-Ann Jedra claimed a 2&1 win in her match against Gillian Vance from Colorado in the consolation bracket. Starting on hole No. 10, Jedra win the first three holes to take a quick 3-up lead. But Vance had trimmed it down to a 1-up advantage at the turn before Jedra won hole No. 2 and hole No. 6 to regain the 3-up cushion. Jedra will play Maria Alzueta Garcia (Michigan) in the fifth place match on Tuesday.
