Brown, Vea Under Par In Final Round at Windon Memorial

GLENCOE, Ill. – Indiana men's golf head coach Mike Mayer said he was hoping a round like Monday's at the Windon Memorial would come for his team. His message to the team since the start of the season was that if one person is able to start going low in a round, that human nature would be for others to follow suit.
So when redshirt freshman Jake Brown birdied four out of five holes on his second nine holes on Monday, that momentum spread to the rest of the team and the Hoosiers posted a team score of 280, which tied for second-best out of the 14 teams at the event. That score also moved IU up the leaderboard for a seventh place finish at 10-over par for the tournament (862; 289-293-280). The 280 in Monday's final round is the best team score by IU since posting a 279 at the NYX Hoosier Invitational on April 6, 2013.
"After Sunday's round, the main thing we talked to the team about was to get a low round," Mayer said. "We knew it was important to get someone going low and Jake decided it would be him. He made just one bogey and six birdies and he was solid all tournament. And then Keegan Vea followed suit and once one guy goes that direction, others want to follow."
For Brown, his final round score of 5-under par 66 marked the best round by a Hoosier since David Mills carded a 66 in his second round at the NYX Hoosier Invitational on April 6, 2013. It is also the best score by an IU freshman since David Erdy registered a 65 on March 22, 2009 at the Collegiate Match Play qualifier in Rancoh Santa Fe, Calif.
Looking more in-depth at Brown's round he birdied his first hole of the day – No. 10 – and then went bogey-birdie on 15 and 16 to go out in 1-under par. From there, he logged birdies on 1, 2, 4 and 5 to get to 5-under on his round. For the tournament, Brown finished with 12 birdies. His overall score of 213 (71-76-66) left him at Even par and tied for 17th individually.
Also coming in with an overall score of 213 and a tie for 17th was junior Keegan Vea, who was 3-under par on his final round. His final 18 holes featured four birdies, one bogey and 13 pars.
Brendon Doyle was able to fight his way back to Even par on his final round with birdies on two of his final three holes of the day. For the tournament, he was 6-over par 219, but played the final 36 holes in 1-over par to place in a tie for 40th.
Senior Max Kollin was not able to get anything going consistently over his final round and ended up with a score of 76. That score gave him a total score of 222 (73-73-76) and a tie for 54th. Junior Andrew Havill was one shot behind Kollin for the tournament, checking in with a total score of 223 (74-74-75) and a tie for 56.
Wrapping up his first collegiate tournament was redshirt freshman Jack Sparrow, who finished with a 75 on Monday to put him at 5-over par for the tournament and a tie for 35th.
"I thought we played well the whole tournament," Mayer said after Monday's final round. "The final round gives us momentum heading into the next tournament, which is at Crooked Stick in Carmel. It is a course that fits us very well, so we are looking forward to it. But at the same time, we know we have to continue to improve each and every time out."
The Hoosiers will return to action Oct. 12-13 at Crooked Stick Golf Club in Carmel, Ind., where they will serve as hosts for the Crooked Stick Invitational.
