BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - After Kevin Yogi Ferrell answered a question about his Indiana legacy Saturday afternoon, Max Bielfeldt pounced on an opportunity to take a playful jab at his teammate.
"How does it feel to be old?" Bielfeldt said among a group of reporters.
Ferrell turned his head and grinned.
"You're older than me," Ferrell said laughing.
Not so fast.
Bielfeldt, despite being a fifth-year senior, is actually a month younger than Ferrell, who continues to climb up the Indiana record books and cement a four-year legacy in Bloomington. Ferrell's seven assists in Indiana's win over Minnesota moved him past Quinn Buckner into second place on Indiana's all-time assists list with 544.
He's now only one dish behind Michael Lewis for the all-time lead.
"It's a great honor," Ferrell said. "But with that, I've played with a lot of great teammates all four years at Indiana. Guys like Nick (Zeisloft), Rob (Johnson) and James (Blackmon) basically get my assists for me."
Ferrell is quick to brush off talk of his legacy and the accolades that come with setting program records after committing to Indiana as a junior at Park Tudor High School. He insists it's the team accomplishments that matter more to him.
"I definitely want milestones, but the main thing that I want is to win," Ferrell said. "No matter what I do on the floor, no matter how I impact the game. I just want to win at the end of the day."
Entering the season, it wasn't a question of if Ferrell would become the program's all-time leader in assists. Granted he stayed healthy, it was a matter of when.
It's become clear Ferrell likely jumps into first place Tuesday night when Indiana plays Illinois at Assembly Hall. Ferrell, who averages 16.9 points, 4.4 rebounds and 5.8 assists per game, has had two or more assists in all but one game dating back to the start of his junior season.
He's only had nine such games over the course of his 120-game career.
Ferrell will also become the first player in program history to lead the Hoosiers in assists in four single seasons. That is, unless Johnson can make up the 47 assists he trails Ferrell by between now and the season's end, which appears unlikely at the rate Ferrell is playing.
His place atop the list of great distributors appears assured.
"He's in great company when you start talking about Quinn Buckner and Michael Lewis," head coach Tom Crean said.
Or as Bielfeldt might say:
Not bad for an old guy.
They may just say the same about him.
