Indiana shows improvement in two games against the Sun Devils
TEMPE, Ariz. – The Indiana water polo team began their season on Saturday morning with a doubleheader against the sixth-ranked Arizona State. The No. 14 Hoosiers fell in both contests to the Sun Devils, but they showed signs of a team that will grow into greatness as the season unfolds.
Indiana vs. Arizona State • January 23, 2016
Game 1 (12:00 p.m. ET): Arizona State 10, Indiana 5
The Hoosiers opened the 2016 season with their first of two games against Arizona State. The Sun Devils jumped out to an early 6-0 lead, which they took into halftime.
Indiana refocused and doubled their efforts in the second half, outscoring the Sun Devils 5-4 in the final 16 minutes of play. 2015 CWPA Rookie of the Year Kelly Matthews scored the Hoosiers' first goal of the season from an assist by true freshman center Kaybree Albright.
After Arizona State's seventh goal of the contest, Indiana responded with two unanswered scores. Redshirt freshman Karrie Kozokar picked up her first collegiate goal off of an assist by Sarah Myers. Sarah Young got on the scoreboard to make it 8-3, and Albright earned her second assist of the game.
The Hoosiers closed the game with two more unanswered goals in the final three minutes. Jordan Elwood entered the ledger with a goal from Myers' second assist. Elwood turned around two minutes later to find Matthews for her second goal of the game.
The Hoosiers out-shot the Sun Devils, 36-28, in the first game of the day. Myers showed her speed by winning three-of-four sprints.
Game 2 (5:30 p.m. ET): Arizona State 13, Indiana 8
Indiana displayed a strong showing in the second game of the day against the Sun Devils. True freshman Kate Pipkin was the highlight for the Hoosiers, earning her first career hat trick in just her second start.
Pipkin opened the scoring for the Hoosiers midway through the second quarter from a Kozokar assist. The Sun Devils followed with two straight scores, but Indiana responded just before the halftime break. Senior Candyce Schroeder scored her first goal of the season, an unassisted attempt with 51 seconds remaining in the second quarter. Arizona State took a 6-2 lead into the half.
The Hoosiers played all-out in the second half. Kozokar responded to an Arizona State score with her second goal of the day, assisted by Sarah Young. Schroeder closed the third quarter with her second goal of the game, with Albright receiving the assist credit.
Indiana ended the day with their best period across both contests. They opened the period with a goal from Kelly Matthews, and Albright picked up her second assist of the game. Less than a minute later, Elwood found Pipkin on the power play for the freshman's second goal.
The Hoosiers responded to two Sun Devil goals with a pair of unanswered scores down the stretch. Sophomore center Jennifer Beadle netted her first goal of 2016, followed by a goal from Pipkin a minute later. The score gave Pipkin her first career hat trick.
Once again, the Hoosiers out-shot the Sun Devils, 27-25, and converted two-of-six power play opportunities. Myers proved that she was the fastest player in the pool as she won all four sprints in the second game.
Hoosier Notes:
• Sophomore Sarah Myers won seven-of-eight sprints across the two contests. She took three-of-four in the first game, and then followed by taking all four sprints later in the day.
• Freshman Kaybree Albright served four assists over the two-game series. After just two games, Albright ranks sixth on the national assist leaderboard.
• Goalkeeper Mary Campbell racked up 18 saves in IU's first two games. The senior ranks eighth nationally in total saves.
• Indiana has now scored 11 of their 13 goals in the second half. The Hoosiers have scored over half of their goals in the fourth period.
• Kelly Matthews and Kate Pipkin are Indiana's leading scorers with three goals apiece.
• Mary Campbell is IU's leader in steals, picking up four over their two games. Kate Pipkin and Sarah Myers follow with three steals each.

The Hoosiers return to the Mona Plummer for two exhibition games against the Sun Devils on Sunday. They'll utilize these contests to gain experience as they prepare for their next tournament, the Bruno Classic, in two weeks.
