BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – For the second consecutive Fall semester, the Indiana Women's Soccer team captured the Herbert Cup by posting the highest GPA of any team at Indiana.
With a mark of over 3.5, the team registered one of the highest GPAs in the program's history.
"Winning the Herbert Cup is an extremely difficult task to begin with; couple that with a larger roster and an in-season sport, and it's nearly impossible," said Eileen O'Rourke, the team's academic advisor. "However, these student-athletes are determined to be their very best academically and their hard work is being recognized with this award. This team showcases the true definition of a student-athlete and we are all so proud of what they have accomplished."
The achievement is the latest in a series for the Hoosiers, who also recently earned 14 Academic All-Big Ten selections and were given the NSCAA Team Academic Award for the fourth straight season.
IU Women's Soccer is unique to many programs in that the team designates an academic captain, in addition to team captains. Sophomore Kayla Smith has served in that role this year and is responsible for acting as a liaison between O'Rourke and the rest of the team, as well as setting team goals and organizing study halls while the team is traveling.
Fall 2014 marked the first time in history that Women's Soccer won the Herbert Cup, which is named after former Indiana University President Adam Herbert.
The team will be recognized with an on-court ceremony during the Men's Basketball game against Nebraska on Feb. 17.
