Men's Track Handles Tennessee, Women's Ends in a Tie
This rivalry used to take place on a yearly basis from 1980 until 1999. Today marks the first time since 1999 that these two teams have squared off. This was the first scored event of the young season for Indiana. First place was awarded five points, second earned three points, and third was given one point.
The men's team won the dual 66-47 due to great efforts in many different events.
Zach Bray started the day by winning the 60m hurdles for the Hoosiers. Adrian Mable and Dylan Anderson placed second and third respectively to earn a sweep in the event. Kyle Duvall carried that momentum into the mile run where he crossed first with a time of 4:10.80. That mark puts him on top of the Big Ten leaderboard and fifth nationally. Once again, the Hoosiers swept the event with Jason Crist and Mark Chandler placing second and third. Markevious Roach continued his strong freshman campaign with a third place finish in the 400m dash, which is the top time currently in the Big Ten. Daniel Kuhn led the way for the Hoosier sweep in the 800m run with a national best, and IU-Tennessee Dual Meet record, time of 1:49.63. Duvall placed second, and Eric Claxton finished in third. Cornelius Strickland turned in the top time in the Big Ten in a second place finish in the 200m dash with a time of 21.66. Jeremy Coughler and Owen Skeete rounded out the Hoosier track scoring with second and third place finishes in the 3,000m run.
In the field events IU found similar success. Freshman Treyton Harris won his first collegiate event by jumping 7.20 meters in the long jump. Dyrek Chowning and Andrew Miller both scored points for IU in the weight throw. Paul Galas took first place in the high jump with a leap of 2.12 meters. Another freshman, Willie Morrison, performed well for the Hoosiers by winning the shot put with a mark of 17.60 meters. David Schall took second in the event.
The women's team competed hard and ended in a tie of 61 points.
Corinne Cominator won her second straight meet in the mile with the nation's fifth best time of 4:52.38. Brenna Calder and Brianna Johnson followed closely behind to give the Hoosiers a sweep in the event. Calder followed up her solid performance in the mile by winning the 800m run. Her time of 2:13.46 currently ranks her at sixth in the nation. Olivia Hippensteel finished just behind her for second, followed by Kendall Wiles in third for yet another Indiana sweep. Johnson went on to win the 3,000m run with a time of 9:59.09. That time is good for fifth in the conference. Haley Harris and Katherine Receveur completed the sweep for the Hoosiers.
Ari Nelson placed second in the long jump to score points for the Hoosiers. Sydney Clute posted the highest mark on the pole vault at 4.07 meters. Nakel McClinton and Laura Schroeder claimed the top two spots in the weight throw. Nakel set the new school record, the top distance in the conference, and third nationally with a throw of 20.60 meters. Danielle Quinn took the crown in the triple jump with a distance of 12.26 meters, which is the second best effort in the country. Rachel Mather ended the afternoon for the Hoosiers with a victory in the high jump. Her win secured a tie for the meet.
Next up for the Hoosiers is a dual meet with Purdue next Saturday, January 16 in West Lafayette.
