BLOOMINGTON, Indiana – Indiana women's tennis swept its double-header on Saturday at the IU Tennis Center, beating Western Michigan in the opening match 5-2 and topping Morehead State in the afternoon 6-1.
The morning match against Western Michigan (5-2) got off to a rough start for the Hoosiers as WMU took the doubles point.
That team point would be the last for Western Michigan for quite some time.
IU's Stephanie Smith gave the Hoosiers their first point of the match with a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Denise Azcui in the No. 5 match. Four more points would follow for Indiana as Natalie Whalen outlasted Barbare Eristavi in a 6-0, 7-6 (8) win at No. 6 singles.
A battle to the end at No. 2 singles wound up in Paula Gutierrez's favor as she defeated Olivia Myers of WMU, 6-2, in the first set and then took the second set tiebreak, 7-6 (6).
With a Hoosiers 4-1 team score and a match win at hand, Sarah McLean continued the winning with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Tracy Kuhle of Western Michigan.
The longest match of the morning, sets wise, came at No. 1 singles as Madison Appel of IU and Melina Lyubomirova needed three sets to decide the winner. Appel would take a close first set 7-5 before Lyubomirova won 6-3 in the second set to extend the match. Appel prevailed in the third set with a 6-2 win giving the Hoosiers a 5-1 team score.
The final match of the morning was the only singles match that Western Michigan would win as Katja Fevralev defeated Kim Schmider, 7-5, 7-5.
The day's second match against Morehead State (0-4) began much better for Indiana as they rolled in doubles. Appel and McLean started the winning for IU with a 6-1 win over Ayaka Terashi and Maria Orenella at No. 1 doubles.
The Hoosiers (5-1) secured the doubles point with a 6-2 win at No. 2 from Smith and Gutierrez. Shortly after, the doubles sweep was complete for Indiana as Danielle Wolf and Sarah Baron beat Lindsey Wild and Aleksandra Savic 6-3 in the No. 3 position.
Singles proved to have the same success as doubles for Indiana as IU's Baron rolled past Lindsey Wild of Morehead State, 6-0, 6-0.
Indiana's Gutierrez followed it up with a 6-3, 6-0 win at No. 2 singles and Wolf's 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 5 clinched the match victory for the Hoosiers.
IU completed the singles with wins at No. 1 by Appel 7-5, 6-2 and a win from McLean 7-6 (7-5), 6-2 at No. 3 singles.
The Hoosiers will be back in action next Sunday, Feb. 14 as the Tennessee Lady Vols come to Bloomington. That match will start at 11 a.m. ET in the IU Tennis Center.
