PISCATAWAY, N.J. – It was a back-and-forth game on Friday (April 15) at Bainton Field, as the Indiana baseball program dropped a 5-3 decision to Big Ten-leading Rutgers. The Hoosiers grabbed the early lead, but the Scarlet Knights late rally proved the difference.
Indiana (13-19, 2-5 B1G) got an unearned run in the third inning before a solo home run from Rutgers (28-6, 9-1 B1G) tied the game. Both teams scored in the seventh and eighth innings, with IU pushing one run across in each frame. The Scarlet Knights tallied one in the seventh and three in the eighth – all unearned – to claim the win.
Senior Phillip Glasser was on base four times and posted his team-leading 13th multi-hit game with a 3-for-3 effort at the plate. He doubled twice, walked and scored one run in the contest. Redshirt-sophomore Bobby Whalen had a pair of hits, walked and scored a run, while junior Hunter Jessee delivered his fifth multi-hit game of the season, one RBI and one run scored.
In his second start of the week, junior John Biagio-Modugno worked four scoreless innings with four strikeouts. He allowed two hits and walked two in a no decision. Junior Ty Bothwell allowed two runs over three innings of work in relief. Freshman Grant Holderfield (2-2) took the loss with three unearned runs allowed on two hits.
Nick Cimillo and Ryan Lasko each hit solo home run, while Evan Sleight drove in two RBIs in the game. Cimillo and Josh Kuroda-Grauer each produced two hits and one RBI in the contest.
