Saturday Slugfest Slips Away Against Illinois

Goforth drives in five RBIs as Hoosiers score 10 runs over the final four innings
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – A late surge wasn't enough as the Indiana baseball program dropped an 18-10 decision to Illinois on Saturday (April 30) at Bart Kaufman Field.
Illinois (23-17, 12-5 B1G) opened the scoring with two runs in the first, third and fifth inning to build a 6-0 lead. A 10-run sixth inning pushed that advantage to 16-0 for the Fighting Illini, before Indiana (19-24, 5-9 B1G) scored 10 of the final 12 runs in the game. The Hoosiers scored one run in the sixth and seventh innings, five runs in the eighth inning and three in the ninth. Illinois got its final two runs in the eighth inning.
Freshman Evan Goforth came off the bench and went 3-for-3 with two doubles and five RBIs. Senior Peter Serruto added a 2-for-2 day with two RBIs at the plate off the bench and hit his first home run of the season in the eighth inning.
Indiana hit two home runs on the afternoon, as freshman Carter Mathison delivered his 11th home run of the season. The 11 home runs are tied for the second-most by a freshman in program history with Micah Johnson (11; 2010) and Mike Sabo (11; 1985). He trails only Alex Dickerson (14; 2009) for the top spot on the rookie charts.
The loss went to senior Bradley Brehmer (4-3) with eight runs allowed – six earned – over 5 1/3 innings of work in the start. He walked four and struck out three.
All nine Illinois starters reached base at least once with eight reaching base multiple times, led by Justin Janas and his 5-for-6 day at the plate with four runs scored and three RBIs. One of Janas's hits was a home run and Jacob Campbell drove in five RBIs that included a home run for the second straight game. Jack Crowder (3-1) allowed one run over six innings of work to earn the win. He struck out four, walked four and allowed just five hits.
