Mathison hits 18th home run of 2022, pitching staff fans tournament-record 18 batters
Top-seeded Maryland (45-10) got on the board with a single run in the first inning and added three runs in the fourth inning. Eighth-seeded Indiana (25-31) got a single run in the sixth inning and three more in the seventh to knot the score. The Hoosiers struck with one run in the 10th, before the Terrapins tallied one in the 10th and one in the 11th to get the win.
In the game, Indiana pitching struck out a Big Ten-record 18 batters to break a record set in 1985 by Ohio State (17; vs. Illinois) and tied earlier in the day by Iowa (17; vs. Penn State). It is the most strikeouts in a game since a 21-strikeout effort against Ball State on April 18, 2018.
For the eighth time in program history, Indiana played extra innings at the Big Ten Tournament. IU is 3-5 in those contests, with the loss snapping a streak of two straight wins in extras at the conference tournament.
Freshman Carter Mathison hit his 18th home run of the season to lead off the seventh inning to move his reached base streak to 23 games and move into a tie for No. 7 on Indiana's single season home run charts. He has tied teammate Matthew Ellis for the team lead, along with Kyle Schwarber (2013) and Alex Smith (1986).
Graduate student Tyler Doanes, redshirt-junior Matthew Ellis and senior Phillip Glasser each chipped in two hits, with Doanes scoring twice in the game. Glasser drove in a pair of RBIs and junior Hunter Jessee drove in one RBI and moved his reached base streak to a career-long 17 games.
Redshirt-sophomore Reese Sharp (4-6) worked a career-high-tying 5 1/3 innings and struck out a career-high nine batters to allow IU to mount the comeback. He allowed four hits and did not walk a batter in the no decision. Starting pitcher Ty Bothwell did not factor into the decision either, with four runs allowed on seven hits over 3 2/3 innings of work. Redshirt-junior Jack Perkins (3-3) took the loss with one run allowed in 1 1/3 innings of work.
Nigel Belgrave (2-0) tossed 1 2/3 innings of scoreless relief to earn the win. The trio of Luke Shliger, Chris Alleyne and Bobby Zmarzlak all had two doubles and two RBIs, while Troy Schreffler plated three runs in the game with one double. In all, Maryland totaled a Big Ten Tournament-record nine doubles.
