2011-2012 Athletic Performance

  • Nine programs finished in the top 15 at the NCAAs in their respective sports.
  • 60 All-Americans representing 11 sports (up from 49 representing nine sports the previous year)
  • A conference-leading four Big Ten Athletes of the Year in their respective sports.
    • Andy Bayer, Men's Indoor Track and Field
    • Derek Drouin, Men's Indoor Track and Field
    • Zac Nees, Men's Diving
    • Allysa Vavra, Women's Swimming
  • IU won the Crimson and Gold Cup (head-to-head competition against Purdue) once again and leads the series 5-1-2.
  • Men's Indoor Track and Field brought home the Big Ten Title and runner Andy Bayer was named Big Ten Athlete of the Championships.
  • All-American runner Andy Bayer was the NCAA outdoor champion in the 1,500 meters.
  • Track and Field took home eight Big Ten individual titles.
  • Track and Field Head Coach Ron Helmer was named Big Ten Coach of the Year.
  • Men's Track & Field finished second in the John McDonnell Program of the Year Award, which recognizes schools that have the best combined finish at the NCAA Championships in cross country, indoor track and field and outdoor track and field.
  • Swimming and Diving broght home six Big Ten individual titles.
  • Men's and Women's Swimming and Diving both finished second in the Big Ten.
  • Diving Head Coach Jeff Huber was named Big Ten Coach of the Year.
  • Men's Basketball defeated three top-five teams and reached the Sweet 16 for the first time since 2002.
  • Men's Basketball player Cody Zeller was named the Big Ten Freshman of the Year.
  • Men's Soccer made its second straight Sweet 16 appearance and ended the season ranked 7th in the nation.
  • Men's Tennis set a school record for wins (24) and finished ranked 22nd in the country.
  • Water Polo set a school record for wins (28) and finished ranked 12th in the country.
  • Baseball finished 2nd in the Big Ten regular season and in the Big Ten Tournament.
  • Softball had back-to-back 30-win seasons for the first time in 15 years.
  • Men's Golf finished second in the Big Ten.
  • Rowing ranked in the nation's top 20 (18th) for the first time in program history.
  • Seven IU athletes competed in London's 2012 Olympic Games.
    • The 2012 London Olympics featured Hoosiers representing six countries in six sports.
    • Canadian high jumper Derek Drouin took home the bronze medal.
    • Swimmer Margaux Farrell earned a bronze as a member of Team France's 4x200 freestyle relay

2011-2012 Academic Performance

  • 242 student-athletes earned Academic All-Big Ten distinction (up from 232 the previous year).
    • A school record of 24 football players earned Academic All-Big Ten honors.
  • Student-athletes had an average cumulative GPA of 3.07.
  • Swimmer Margaux Farrell won the prestigous Wayne Duke Postgraduate Scholarship, awarded annually to one male and one female Big Ten senior student-athlete pursuing a postgraduate degree. The award recognizes achievements in academics, athletics, civic service and leadership.

2011-2012 Department

  • In August 2011, the IU Board of Trustees approved construction of a new baseball/softball complex to be located on the north edge of the IU Athletics campus. COnstruction is underway and completion of the $19.8 million project is scheduled prior to the 2013 season.
  • Dedicated the new D. Ames Shuel Academic Center. The 25,800-square-foot academic center features a modern computer lab, dedicated tutoring and study space, staff offices for confidential sessions and a casual study area with cafe and lounge.
  • Hired Curt Miller as the new head women's basketball coach. Miller comes to IU from Bowling Green where he won MAC Coach of the Year honors six times and compiled the 16th best winning percentage in women's basketball history. Won MAC regular season and/or tournaent championship every year for the last eight years.
  • In 2011, Football increased ticket sales again, marking the second consecutive year that home attendance has exceed 41,000 per game (over 10,000 more fans per game than in 2009).
  • In 2011-2012, Men's Basketball had the largest student section in the country (7,632) and attendance ranked 9th nationally (up from 12th the previous year).
  • The IU Varsity Club announced its best annual giving fundraising year ever with $9 million for student-athlete scholarships. (up 13.3 percent over the previous year).
  • Expanded department’s environmental and sustainability initiative—Greening Cream and Crimson.
    • IU Athletics finished first among Big Ten schools in two categories (Greenhouse Gas & Recycling) in the EPA Game Day Challenge.
