Greenspan Reports Progress on Athletics Facilities to IU Trustees
Dec. 12, 2008
INDIANAPOLIS - Director of Athletics Rick Greenspan and Vice President Terry Clapacs met with the IU Trustees Facilities Committee today in Indianapolis to provide a progress update on the "For the Glory of Old IU" athletic capital campaign.
Greenspan and Clapacs presented photos and updates on the North End Zone Facility at Memorial Stadium and the Basketball Development Center. Both facilities are currently under construction in Bloomington. Workers from F.A. Wilhelm Construction are working to finalize installation of precast concrete and windows to the exterior of North End Zone Facility. Once the exterior of the building is completed this month, construction will move inside for the winter. The building is scheduled for completion in August 2009. Weddle Bros. Construction Co is currently building the Basketball Development Center. After many months spent on site excavation and utility work, construction on the building is now focused on foundation and structural elements. The building will continue to take shape throughout the year with completion anticipated by January 2010. View photos of the Basketball Development Center
Funds are still being sought for three other facilities, new baseball and softball stadiums and an academic resource center. Greenspan indicated his hope that the Baseball Stadium will be the next facility to begin construction. He shared that a lead gift is currently being considered and that the Varsity Club is working to secure other private gifts as well.
Once the North End Zone Facility is completed, vacated space underneath the East side of Memorial Stadium will be repurposed into a new 18,000-square-foot Academic Resource Center. This new center will replace a 2,500 square-foot-space in Assembly Hall with more computers, classrooms, study areas, and tutoring rooms.
Greenspan thanked members of the Facilities Committee for their support of the campaign. He also urged them to continue to work openly with the Department of Athletics so that each new facility can move forward to completion.
The "For the Glory of Old IU" athletic capital campaign is the first comprehensive campaign in history to raise $80 million for student-athlete facility projects and renovations, endowment and on-going annual support of student-athlete scholarships.
