    No pre-registration is needed for the clinic. Only required form for the clinic is the Limited Revocable License and General Release form.

    1. Applicant should be undergraduate student (12 hours minimum) and should be enrolled on the IU Bloomington campus as an undergraduate student during both semesters in year of competition.
    2. A current IU student must have at least 2.000 cumulative grade point (no round-ups) to try out.
    3. Cheerleaders selected must be making normal progress toward a degree and meet these minimum number of IU total semester hours:
      • --End of freshman year . . . . . . . . . 24 hours
      • --End of sophomore year . . . . . . . . 51 hours
      • --End of junior year . . . . . . . . . . . 78 hours
      • --End of senior year . . . . . . . . . . . 105 hours
    4. Every applicant must submit by Monday, March 17, 2014, the 2014-15 application, the medical history questionnaire, the medical physical examination and the proof of medical insurance (Student-Athlete Insurance" form) with a photocopy of the health insurance and prescription drug card(s) which cover(s) you. FORMS MUST BE RECEIVED ON TIME TO BE ELIGIBLE FOR SELECTION WEEKEND.

    The following steps must be fulfilled by Cheerleader applicants for try-outs:

    1. Every applicant at his/her own expense must have performed a medical physical and complete the medical history questionnaire.
    2. Every applicant must present proof of medical insurance completing the "Student-Athlete Insurance" form and providing a photocopy of the health insurance and prescription drug card(s) which cover(s) you.
    3. All forms must be returned to Indiana University Athletics by Monday, March 17, 2014. These individuals are not allowed to participate in ANY organized Cheerleader Squad activities until the medical packet has been reviewed by the Director of Sports Medicine and clearance given to the individual. The final decision for a person's physical qualifications and participation in the Indiana program or reason for rejection rests solely with the Sports Medicine director. The Sports Medicine Department is not liable for any injuries or illnesses that may occur when the Cheerleaders have not been cleared medically.
    4. For those individuals who were part of the Cheerleading during the previous season and again made the roster, they must have a return physical performed through the Sports Medicine Department in August prior to attending their annual Summer Camp.
    5. During the season of competition, the name of any Cheerleader who is added to the roster must be given to the Sports Medicine Department within 24 hours, and that person must complete the Sports Medicine Department's medical packet and be cleared by the Director of Sports Medicine before any level of participation may occur.

    Any preliminary activities similar to try-out workouts or camps are not a part of the Departmental Program; therefore, such activities are not covered by these policies.

    2014-15 CLINIC

    This is not a required event but is STRONGLY encouraged for those interested in the Indiana University program. It will help sharpen your skills and prepare you for the try-outs. We will be teaching five sidelines, the IU School Song, and the IU Fight Song to all candidates which will be evaluated during the selection weekend. This will give you a head start on knowing the material. We will also review stunting techniques for both coed and all girl stunts. We will not be teaching "how to stunt" at the actual selection weekend.

    If you can't attend the clinic, that's certainly understandable. The instruction time at the clinic helps candidates to work with current program members and the IU coaching staff prior to April. This will help allow candidates to come to the selection weekend with a little more confidence.

    The clinic cost is $40.00 per person payable in cash the day of the event. Payment will be accepted at registration from 9:30 - 10:00 a.m.

    You also must complete the Limited Revocable License and General Release form.

    Any clinic attendee 18 years of age or younger must have your parent sign the form as the witness. Instruction will be taught by coaching staff, graduating program members, and former Indiana University Cheerleaders. The clinic is open to any high school juniors or seniors and anyone trying out for the Indiana Program.

    Workout gear is recommended for the Spring clinic. We do not recommend wearing other university/college logos.

    Coaches and parents of interested candidates are encouraged and welcome to attend. We will hold a question/answer session for coaches/parents during the clinic.

    Please be aware this is an important part of the selection process. You should be "game ready" at all times throughout the weekend.

    Ladies- We ask that you have game make up on at all times and have your hair curled and styled as if you were at a game. You may wear bows if you like.

    Gentlemen- You must be clean shaven and have trimmed hair. No earrings!

    T-shirts are not acceptable for the selection weekend for all candidates.

    Ladies: Collared golf type shirt, cheer shorts, white socks, and leather cheer shoes are acceptable.

    Gentlemen: Collared golf type shirt, gym shorts, white athletic socks, and shoes are required.

    Please be tasteful in your selections. Wearing other university/college logos is NOT recommended. We are asking that everyone wear red, white, black or gray.

    -- All shirts must be tucked in at all times for both males and females.

    --NO HATS OR NYLON SHOES ARE PERMITTED. Shoes must be worn at all times during the selection weekend.


    Cream and Crimson Female Candidates - Each candidate must perform the minimum of a standing back handspring, standing tuck, standing back handspring tuck, cartwheel back tuck.
    Combinations of jumps to a standing tumbling skill are recommended in this section. Examples include (but are not limited to):
    Toe touch/back handspring
    Toe touch/back tuck
    Double toe touch/ back tuck
    Toe touch/back handspring/tuck

    Cream Male Candidates - It is recommended that each candidate perform a standing tuck. We would like all males to execute at least one other tumbling pass other than the required standing back tuck.

    Cream and Crimson Female Candidates - All female candidates must perform a minimum of the following two passes:
    • Round off, back handspring, tuck
    • Round off, back handspring, layout
    We will ask to see at least two additional tumbling passes. You may choose to show your best tumbling skills at this time. We ask that you choose tumbling passes that will make you competitive against the other candidates.
    Cream Male Candidates - We encourage all male candidates to perform as much tumbling as possible. We would like to see a round off, back handspring, tuck as a minimum.

    * All tumbling needs to be performed without a spotter.


    This is required for all candidates. Both the fight song and the school song include a standing tuck and must be performed throughout the season. Both the fight song and the school song include a "two step" for the ladies. Please be sure that this is an area of concentration for you while doing motions. Both the fight song and the school song should be able to be performed on both the football field and basketball court.


    Candidates may be asked to perform 1-5 of the sidelines required over the selection weekend.

    Material should be executed in a collegiate manner, conducive to college athletics. Excessive facials, arm waving, and wide motions are not encouraged.

    Candidates should be prepared to use poms, signs and megs during this section of the selection process. This is not required, but we will have all available during the sideline portion.

    Megs are to be used by gentlemen only.

    Poms are to be used by ladies only.

    ** Stunts may be full up or double down

    Non-Returning Cream (Coed) Requirements -
    1. Walk in or toss extension pop down or full down
    2. Liberty of choice - this may be a toss, walk in, or from hands.
    3. Optional stunt
    ** Optional stunt does not have to include a transition, but is encouraged if you can perform two stunts together.

    We will be looking for the following stunts throughout the selection process -
    1. Straight up Extension*
    2. Straight up Liberty*
    3. Straight up Stretch*
    4. Full up Lib or variation*
    5. Optional stunt sequence
    *Stunts may be full up or double down
    ** The stunting portion of selections for the Crimson squad will be handled much like a practice setting. The program coaches will place candidates in groups throughout this time.

    We are looking for candidates that display the ability to perform at more than one position. Being as versatile as possible with stunting is recommended.

    Be prepared to move around in groups and to perform more than one base position if asked. We are looking for strength, technique and core awareness in stunting technique from each candidate.

    Question: Can I bring my own partner for my personal try-out?

    Answer: NO. It will not do the Indiana cheerleading program any good to have people stunting with you who will not be a part of the program. The only exception to this will be if we run into a larger number of females going through the selection process than males. At this point, we will make arrangements ahead of time to have qualified males available.

    Question: Will all stunts be spotted at the selection weekend even if I can do the stunt?

    Answer: YES. This is for safety purposes only.

    Question: Is it harder for the old members to make the squad again?

    Answer: YES. We will have different skills requirements for all returning members from both squads.

    Question: How do I get a partner to try out with in April?

    Answer: There are a few ways to find a partner for your selection weekend:

    1. Getting in touch with someone ahead of time that you know already in the program or that is trying out for the squad next year;

    2. Attending the February Clinic and getting a chance to practice and meet people;

    3. If needed, one of the coaches will help pair you with someone (Please let us know before the try-out procedure begins and not immediately before we start evaluating stunting.).

    Question: How do I know what type of stunter I am for the Varsity All-Female Crimson Squad?

    Answer: Hopefully, you have done quite a bit of stunting prior to this try-out. If you have a general knowledge of cheerleading stunting, you can be any type of stunter with the correct strength and technique. [Go back to the top of this page]

    How Important Is Appearance?

    Appearance will be considered at all times during the try-out. You should wear what makes you the most comfortable.

    • It is very important you remember you're trying out for an extremely high profile position representing Indiana University;
    • We are looking for the All-American type female and male.
    • Gentlemen: Please SHAVE before attending each clinic and selection weekend. This is required and expected from those who are selected for the program. Facial hair MAY NOT be grown during the course of the year in the program. This does include goatees.
    • Gentlemen: No earrings are to be worn at anytime. This includes all practices, appearances, games, special events,bus rides, etc.
    • Ladies: you will need to look like you are "Game Ready" at the clinic and at the selection weekend. This includes natural make-up and hair curled, pulled up, etc.
    • DO NOT wear a shirt that you found at the bottom of your closet for either the clinic or selection weekend!
    • DO NOT wear anything during the selection weekend that features another school or university's name, logo or mascot!

    After Try-Outs And About The IU Program...

    If you are selected for one of the Indiana University teams, you'll be required to stay for a team meeting and the first practice after the teams are announced.

    If you are NOT selected for either of the teams during the selection process, DO NOT have your parents contact either the University or IU Coaching Staff.

    2014-15 School Year Commitments

    August 18-19, 2014: - Move-in Day for Fall Classes
    August 19-21, 2014: - Practice in Bloomington
    August 22, 2014: - Tradition and Spirit Event at 4:30 p.m.
    August 25, 2014: - First day of Fall Semester Classes
    * All home football games are required
    * Assigned volleyball games are required
    * All home men's basketball games are required (including those that fall over Thanksgiving, Christmas and Spring Breaks)
    * All home women's basketball games are required (including those that fall over Thanksgiving, Christmas and Spring Breaks)

    1. Practice Times: Tuesday and Thursday from 5:30-8:30 p.m., and Sunday from 6-8 p.m. Please DO NOT register for classes during this time period. Your practices are mandatory. Professors schedule tests during practice times. We ask that you plan ahead and attempt to work out alternate test times with your professors.

    2. Work-Out/Conditioning Times: Conditioning times will be given to us for Fall Semester. We'll be scheduled around the varsity athletic teams' times. You will be required to work out two (2) times per week. If you do not work out, you do not cheer the game that week. Each work-out lasts about one hour, and time and day is determined each semester.

    3. Games: You are required to be present at all games for the sport you are supporting regardless of when the game may be - team members do not get to pick and choose games to attend. If you cheer for Men's and Women's Basketball and there's a scheduled game over Thanksgiving, Christmas and Spring Breaks, you WILL be present at the game. All of the basketball players show up; therefore, you, too, will show up. Please be aware of this requirement prior to trying out. We'll have as many approved schedules available for you to see during the try-out weekend as possible. Again, professors schedule tests outside of class times, and the tests may come in conflict with games. We ask you to plan ahead and attempt to work out alternate times with your professors.

    4. Nationals Competition Commitment: College Nationals is not a program priority; rather, it is a goal. First and foremost, all squads must master game cheering and basic fundamentals for the primary purpose of Indiana Cheerleading is support of our varsity sports. Every program member will be considered for a National team. The IU Coaching Staff will announce the National teams during the Fall semester. IU will attend the UCA College Cheerleading Championships held at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida each January.

    College Nationals require a lot of extra practice, time and patience. If you are selected for a National team, plan on very little Christmas Break. It is imperative we practice over the Holiday Break. The 2013-14 Crimson Cheer Squad practiced through Dec. 22 and then returned to practice on December 27. The 2015 National Competition will be Jan. 15-19, 2015.

    Additional items will be available during the year. These items are not required purchases, but are available to each program member and their families

    Besides your personal expenses (shown as examples above), each squad member will be required to seek contributions of $750 - NO EXCEPTIONS! These contributions are required from each member and are in addition to your personal expenses for items you may need to purchase. All money will pay for camp expenses, food expenses during camp, t-shirts, game meals, choreography, awards, nationals expenses, etc. This should be the only time during the athletic year for solicitation contributions. All contributions should be turned into the program by the first June practice.

    We make every attempt to keep costs down. Please DO NOT let these expenses weigh in your decision to go through the selection process for the IU Cheerleading Program. We understand very well that individuals may not be able to afford all expenses. We make every attempt to help those needing financial assistance.
