Buckley Blasts Big Throw on Day One of Hoosier Hills

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Indiana track & field team won a total of seven events as they opened competition in their final home indoor meet of the season with the Hoosier Hills Invitational Friday at Gladstein Fieldhouse.
Senior Kyla Buckley won the shot put with a heave of 16.98m (55-8.5), the second best mark in school history and currently the sixth best in the NCAA this season.
On the track freshman Bethany Neeley, paced by her twin sister Brittany Neeley for 800m won the mile in 4:49.73, a three second season-best. Freshman Amanda Behnke finished third in 4:59.44 and fellow freshman Jean Rouse won the 400m in a season-best 56.90.
The men’s distance medley relay won the invitational section in 9:40.51, the fourth best time in the Big Ten and 14th best time in the NCAA this season.
Junior Shawntanay Johnson and redshirt sophomore La Toya Williams both qualified for tomorrow’s final of the 60m dash as they ran 7.64 and 7.69 respectively. Sophomore Zach Bray also qualified for the final of the 60m hurdles as he matched his season-best in 8.12.
Freshman Ari Nelson and redshirt sophomore Sarah Maxson earned top-three finishes as Nelson finished second in the long jump in 5.94m and Maxson finished third in the high jump with a clearance of 1.77m. Redshirt freshman Nakel McClinton finished fourth in the weight throw with a mark of 18.33m, the ninth best mark in school history.
Redshirt sophomore Owen Skeete finished second in the men’s 3,000m in 8:22.71.
Indiana will continue competition in the Hoosier Hills Invitational tomorrow at 11:30 a.m. at Gladstein Fieldhouse.
