Four More Hoosiers Punch Tickets to NCAAs

GREENSBORO, N.C. - Indiana track and field advanced four more athletes to the NCAA Outdoor Championships in Eugene, Ore., on day two at the East Preliminary Round. True freshman Sophie Gutermuth advanced in the pole vault via a third attempt clearance, and Emma Kimoto punched her NCAA ticket with a third attempt make of her own in the high jump. Josh Roche and Robby Nierman both ran career bests in the 3,000m steeplechase to punch their tickets to Oregon. Indiana now has seven athletes qualified for Eugene, and the three women qualified are more than in 2012 with another day of qualifying left in the meet.
Gutermuth cleared 4.10m (13-5.25) on her third attempt in the pole vault, one of 10 to clear the height in the competition. The redshirt freshman entered the competition seeded 40th out of 48 competitors with a lifetime best of 3.92m (12-10.25). She becomes Indiana's fifth 13-foot pole vaulter all-time and moves to number four in the IU records book. Sydney Clute cleared 3.85m (12-7.5) for 21st place.
Kimoto cleared 1.81m (5-11.25) in the high jump, one of 12 jumpers to clear the bar. She earns a trip to the NCAA Outdoor Championships for the second-straight year. The senior cleared the bar on her third attempt, matching her qualifying performance from 2012. Sarah Maxson was 37th, clearing 1.67m (5-5.75).
Roche took third in his heat of the 3,000m steeplechase to automatically qualify for the NCAA meet. The redshirt freshman finished in 8:47.44, which ranks 10th in IU history. Nierman ran 8:46.95 for fifth in the first heat, and his time was one of the top-three times for non-automatic qualifiers. His time ranks ninth in IU history. Indiana advances multiple runners to the NCAA meet in the men's steeplechase for the third straight year, and has at least one men's steepler for the fourth-straight season. Nolan Fife took 31st in 9:06.39.
In the women's steeplechase, Samantha Ginther ran 10:20.42 for 19th, Caitlin Engel was 24th in 10:24.66 and Brianna Johnson ran 10:29.46 for 27th. Johnson moves to number seven in the IU record books.
Chris Vaughn was 18th in the men's 400m quarterfinals, running 47.34. Jordan Gray ran 2:14.16 for 24th in the women's 800m quarterfinal. La Toya Williams ran 24.10 for 30th in the women's 200m prelims, while Cornelius Strickland went 21.25 for 31st in the men's 200m. Derek Drouin fell in the men's hurdles, finishing in 15.40 for 45th.
