GUANIJUATO, Mex. -
Andy Bayer capped his outdoor season by making his first career appearance in the red, white and blue as a member of Team USA, winning the 5,000 meters at the North America, Central America, Caribbean Under-23 Championships in Mexico.
Bayer dropped the field with three laps to go, leaving 15 seconds between him and the second-place finisher by end of the race. His time of 15:13.01 was a sign of the tactical race run at moderate altitude. The NACAC gold medal caps an outdoor season that saw him win a Big Ten title, NCAA title and finish fourth at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials.
