Outside The Lanes: Twin Challenge
Jan. 15, 2014
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – In the latest episode of Outside the Lanes, Kelsie and Terry put the Neeley and Gutermuth twins to the test to see which set of twins knows each other better.
Bethany and Brittany Neeley are freshman on the team this year. Last year they combined to set six Indiana state high school records in a span of 21 days in June, including teaming up on the Eastern 4X800-meter relay team that won a state championship, set a state record and recorded the eighth fastest time (8:53.74) in the nation ever run in that event for high school track & field.
Bethany also represented team USA at the 2013 Pan American Junior Games in Medellin, Colombia after finishing runner-up in the 3000m steeplechase at the 2013 USATF Junior Outdoor Nationals.
Redshirt sophomores, Sophie and Nina Gutermuth, who were coached by their father at Leo High School, were two of the best Indiana high school pole vaulters. In 2011 they went 1-2 at the Indiana State Championship meet.
Coach Helmer on Nina and Sophie: "Nina and Sophie Gutermuth were very, very impressive several weeks ago at the Indiana State Meet. They demonstrated the size, athleticism, intensity and poise necessary to give them a great chance to be outstanding National level pole vaulters during their time here at IU. They will be good, the only question is how good?"
