Jan. 21, 2013
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana track and field produced one of the Big Ten's best performances for the third time in as many meets, as Zach Mayhew was named Big Ten Track Athlete of the Week, the conference announced. Mayhew pulls in the award for the second time this season. Mayhew clocked the Big Ten's best 3,000-meter time of the season at the Gladstein Invitational
Indiana track and field director and head coach Ron Helmer said that Mayhew's early-season performances are a sign that he will be a factor for the Hoosiers when the championship schedule comes next month.
"Zach was able to run at a high-level and record a lifetime best," said Helmer. "To perform at his best this early in the season shows that he has the potential to continue to thrive as our season goes forward."
Mayhew was second in the 3,000m invitational, finishing as the top collegiate behind only professional athlete Lee Emanuel. His time of 8:02.73 is the second fastest time in the nation on the young season. The time moves him into eighth all-time in the IU record books.
The Hoosiers host the Indiana Invitational on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 25-26. For complete coverage of all things IU track and field, stay tuned to IUHoosiers.com.
