Jan. 27, 2014
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Following his third-place (first-place collegiate) finish in the 3,000m run at the Gladstein Invitational, sophomore Matt Schwartzer (Virginia Beach, Va.) was named the Big Ten Track Athlete of the Week, the conference announced today.
Schwartzer’s time of 8:05.77 in the 3K is the top time in the Big Ten and the 13th best time in the NCAA.
With the IU men holding four of the top-20 NCAA times in the 3K and five of the top-20 times in the 5K, head coach Ron Helmer talked about the success of the distance group.
“That group of guys are really good and they work really hard,” Helmer said. “They have bought in at an extraordinary level and they love to compete, so the result is they perform at a pretty high level.”
Up next Schwartzer and the Hoosiers compete in the Indiana Relays, Jan. 31-Feb. 1 at Gladstein Fieldhouse.
