Bayer Named Academic All-American of the Year
June 27, 2013
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The College Sports Information Directors of America have announced that Andy Bayer is the 2013 Capital One Academic All-American of the Year for men's track and field and cross country. Bayer earns Capital One Academic All-America honors for the third straight year and first team accolades for the second-straight year. Bayer is the only male to earn the award for Indiana track and field all-time, and in six years under track and field director Ron Helmer, Hoosiers have pulled in 10 Academic All-America awards, including in each of the past five seasons. Bayer's award is the 91st in the history of IU Athletics and the 13th all-time for IU track and field.
Helmer said Bayer has thrived as a student-athlete and the program is proud to continue to produce Academic All-Americans in addition to achieving in competition.
"As a program, we want to develop our student-athletes to their full competitive potential, while also asking them to achieve at similar levels in the class room," said Helmer. "It is very rewarding to have athletes like Andy, who take both of those opportunities and maximize them. Over the past five seasons, our program has hung 10 Capital One Academic All-America awards on the wall, and that is a testament to our academic staff and the work of our student-athletes."
Bayer is a biology major who graduated this spring from Indiana University with a 3.60 G.P.A. A native of Leo, Ind., Bayer is the only Hoosiers' male track and field student-athlete to earn Capital One Division I Academic All-America® honors. He was a second team Capital One Academic All-America® selection in 2011 and 2012.
The 2012 NCAA outdoor 1,500 meter champion, Bayer finished his career as an 11-time All-American including an eighth place finish in the 1,500 at the 2013 national meet. He was a two-time NCAA runner-up, and also earned indoor All-America honors in the distance medley relay and 3,000 meters.
Bayer was a six-time Big Ten champion and became the third runner in Big Ten history to win both the 1,500 and 5,000 meter titles at the 2013 Big Ten Outdoor Championships. He scored 26 points to lead Indiana to the 2012 Big Ten Indoor Track and Field championship. During his career, Bayer earned Big Ten Freshman of the Year honors and was also a Big Ten Distinguished Scholar.
