Compliance Corner: Playing By The Rules, 5 Points of Emphasis
March 27, 2014
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Indiana University has some of the best fans in the country! Your passion and support for our student-athletes, coaches, and department is greatly appreciated and helps IU remain as one of the most competitive Division I schools in country. In order to stay atop the country’s best, it is also important that IU is always in compliance with all NCAA rules and regulations. Please keep in mind the following five points of emphasis to help ensure Indiana University is playing by the rules.
Always “Ask Before You Act.” By asking questions you are doing your part to help protect the eligibility of Indiana University student-athletes. Additionally, if you know of a NCAA rules violation or an alleged violation you must report it to the Indiana University Compliance Office.
Leave the recruiting to IU Coaches. It is not permissible to make contact with a prospect, their parents, or relatives for the purpose encouraging their participation on an IU athletics team. This includes social media interaction (i.e. facebook, twitter, Instagram), telephone calls, letters, emails, and facsimiles, along with any face-to-face contact either on- or off-campus.
Gifts and free or discounted goods and services are never permissible. It is not permissible to provide student-athletes with any type of gifts including, birthday, graduation, or congratulatory gifts. Also, they may not receive special discounts, payment arrangements, credits or free or reduced price services that are not available to the general public.
Occasional meals on an occasional basis. On an occasional basis, you MAY provide a student-athlete or team (not family members or friends) with a meal. That meal may be catered, but it must occur on IU’s campus or in your home. Please contact the Compliance Office if you are interested in having an occasional meal with current student-athletes.
Student-athletes make good employees. It is permissible to hire student-athletes provided they are being paid for work performed and receiving a rate of pay that is comparable to the going rate for the service provided. Don’t forget to have the Athletics Compliance Office approve the employment prior to hiring a student-athlete.
Thank you for all you do for Indiana University Athletics and for your assistance in helping us play by the rules. Should you have any questions, please feel free to contact the Indiana University Compliance Office at email@example.com, or visit the compliance website.
