Compliance Corner: Graduation and Senior Gifts
April 25, 2014
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The Indiana University Athletics Compliance Office focuses much of its time and attention on the monitoring and education of booster interaction with prospective student-athletes and current student-athletes with eligibility remaining. However, we would be remiss if April and May go by without a brief reminder as it relates to student-athletes finishing their athletics careers and graduating seniors. Please remember that the extra benefit legislation continues to apply to this group in the same way it applies to current student-athletes.
A specific and very timely example is the provision of senior student-athlete and graduation gifts by fans and boosters. NCAA rules prohibit student-athletes from accepting graduation and senior gifts (i.e. gift cards, cash, and tangible items) at the completion of their athletics careers in the same way current student-athletes are prohibited from accepting the same. Remember, once a student-athlete, always a student-athlete.
Should you have specific questions regarding senior and graduation gifts provided to student-athletes, please do not hesitate to contact the IU Athletics Compliance Office at email@example.com, or visit the compliance website. Thank you for your continued support of IU Athletics and helping us play by the rules.
