BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The IU Varsity Club announced today that its donors contributed a total of $16.1 million for IU Athletics during the 2013-2014 fiscal year, which ended June 30, 2014.

With $11.69 million in contributions for student-athlete scholarships, the $16.1 million year-end total represents the second highest fundraising year in the history of the IU Varsity Club. June of 2014 was the single largest month of giving with $4.3 million.

“We are incredibly proud to see so many donors continue to support our student-athletes each and every year,” said Deputy Athletic Director Scott Dolson. “Varsity Club donors represent our most passionate and dedicated Hoosier fans and alumni. Their support truly makes it possible for Hoosier teams to excel and for IU student-athletes to follow their dreams.”

Funds donated by the Varsity Club’s more than 6,500 annual giving fund donors support student-athlete scholarships in all of IU’s 24 varsity sports. Over 67 percent of IU’s 617 varsity student-athletes received athletic scholarship assistance last year. 30.1 percent received full scholarships; 37.9 percent received partial scholarship support.

“It’s vital for IU Athletics to have the Varsity Club,” said Vice President and Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Fred Glass “We do not receive discounted tuition or other financial support from the campus, student fees, or taxpayers on behalf of our student-athletes on scholarship. The dedication and generosity of the IU Varsity Club’s members impact our team success and keep our programs thriving.”

While providing funding for student-athlete scholarships is always a top priority, the Varsity Club also engages in capital fundraising projects to provide facilities and equipment for student-athletes.

The IU Varsity Club’s 2013-2014 fundraising year was highlighted by a $40 million multi-year pledged gift announced in December 2013 from IU alumna Cindy Simon Skjodt to provide renovations to Assembly Hall and launch IU Athletics' capital campaign. In honor of the landmark and largest single gift in the IU Varsity Club’s history, IU will rename Assembly Hall. Read more about Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall.

“I want to thank the Varsity Club Board of Directors, Capital Campaign Steering Committee and Vice President and Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Fred Glass for their continual advocacy, leadership and guidance in our fundraising efforts,” added Deputy Athletic Director Scott Dolson. “Their passion for providing funding and support for our student-athletes is unprecedented.

“Our fundraising success also would not be possible without the team behind the scenes. The IU Athletics Ticket Office, IU Foundation, and our entire IU Athletics staff have all played integral roles in this uncharted success. Their hard work and dedication has been remarkable.”
