LAWRENCE, Kan. - The Indiana cross country teams competed at the Rim Rock Farm Classic on Saturday morning with the men's team taking second place and women coming in third. Top runners for the Hoosiers were Zach Mayhew, who crossed the line in second place, and Caitlin Engel who finished 14th.
The IU men finished just nine points behind the event's host, Kansas. Indiana scored 44 total team points as 14 teams competed in the race. Mayhew clocked in at 23:11.9 in the 8K run, 15 seconds ahead of teammate Andy Bayer, who placed third overall in 23:26.0. Robby Nierman was the third Hoosier to finish, taking 11th overall in 24:15.1. Rounding out the scoring for IU was Adam Behnke (13th, 24:18.2) and Matt Schwartzer (15th, 24:18.6).
Engel paced the Hoosier women by crossing the line in 21:12.1 in the 6K race. Following just four seconds behind her was teammate Kelsey Duerksen in 18th (21:16.6), then Arianne Raby in 19th (21:17.0). Molly Hirt took 25th in 21:42.8 as Erica Ridderman placed 27th in 21:46.3 to also score for IU. The Indiana women scored 99 team points as No. 11 Michigan took first and No. 22 Toledo finished in second place in the team standings.
IU will next take to the course on a split weekend beginning with the Adidas Invitational on Friday, Oct. 12 in Madison, Wis. and the Pre-Nationals race in Louisville, Ky. on Saturday, Oct. 13.
