Men 4th, Women 6th at Great Lakes Regional Championship

MADISON, Wis. – The Indiana men’s cross country team put six runners in the top-25 to finish in fourth-place and senior Samantha Ginther paced the women’s team to a sixth-place finish Friday at the Great Lakes Regional Championship.
The men’s team race was extremely close between the top four teams, as just five points separated them. Michigan was the team winner with 70 points, followed by Wisconsin (73), Notre Dame (74) and Indiana (75).
Junior Evan Esselink, who finished in 11th place in a time of 30:39 over the 10K course, led the men’s team. Also finishing in the top-25 and earning All-Region honors were freshman Jason Crist (13th, 30:40), freshman Carl Smith (15th, 30:42), sophomore Matthew Schwartzer (17th, 30:43), junior JR Ricker (19th, 30:52) and senior Robby Nierman (25th, 31:03).
On the women’s side senior Samantha Ginther finished 10th in 20:35 over the 6K course. Following Ginther was freshman Amanda Behnke (31st, 21:10), senior Erica Ridderman (35th, 21:16), freshman Bethany Neeley (67th, 21:55) and freshman Chanli Mundy (75th, 22:03).
Michigan won the women’s team race with 48 points, followed by Butler (67), Michigan State (73), Notre Dame (134), Wisconsin (136) and Indiana (218).
The top two teams in each of nine regionals automatically qualify for the NCAA Cross Country Championships Nov. 23 in Terre Haute, Ind. The remainder of the field is made up of 13 teams who receive at-large bids. The entire field will be released tomorrow at 3:00 p.m. ET on NCAA.com.
