BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Just days removed from winning the Big Ten cross country individual title, Indiana senior Zach Mayhew was unanimously picked by the conference coaches as the 2012 Big Ten Athlete of the Year.

Mayhew crossed the line in first place overall at the 2012 Big Ten Cross Country Championships in East Lansing, Mich., on Oct. 28, becoming the first Hoosier male to win the conference individual title since Bob Kennedy in 1992.

Mayhew, a Terre Haute, Ind., native, outran two Wisconsin Badgers in former All-American Maverick Darling (2nd, 23:35) and 2012 Olympian Mohammed Ahmed (3rd, 23:36) to take the championship in a time of 23:30 over the 8K course. The win also gave Mayhew his fourth-consecutive cross-country All-Big Ten honor.
