FRESHMAN YEAR: 2011
Selected as a Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American ... a First Team All-Big Ten honoree, the only freshman in the conference to earn that distinction ... a unanimous choice for the Big Ten's All-Freshman team ... named the Big Ten Pitcher of the Week on May 9 and the Freshman of the Week twice ... led the team with a 2.80 ERA and seven wins, slotting him second and fifth in the conference, respectively ... a lightning-quick pickoff move nabbed him a Big Ten-best 12 runners ... the highest team total besides IU in the Big Ten was only 13 pickoffs ... compiled 53 strikeouts in his 15 appearances, including nine starts ... earned the Friday starter role for the final three weeks of the season ... tied the all-time school record for strikeouts in a Big Ten contest, fanning 11 batters during an eight-inning shutout performance at Iowa (4/17) ... blanked Northwestern (5/6) for eight frames as well, picking up the `W' in both games as classmate Ryan Halstead completed the combined shutout each time ... pinch ran to score a run in the 11th inning of a 13-inning victory over Morehead State (3/4) ... later in the Morehead State game, he cracked a two-out single to push the eventual game-winning runner over to third base in the bottom of the 13th ... scored a run in all three games of the Purdue series (4/29-5/1), starting the opener on the mound and the last two contests in the outfield.
Earned four letters for Matt Chess at Torrey Pines ... earned High School All-America status from Collegiate Baseball Newspaper ... was named San Diego County Player of the Year, First Team All-California Interscholastic Federation, Avocado League Player of the Year and First Team All-North County as a senior ... helped Torrey Pines to the CIF semifinals after being a force both on the mound and in the outfield ... posted a 10-2 record on the mound with a 1.15 ERA and 97 strikeouts in 73 innings of work ... also surrendered just 20 walks and 58 hits on the season ... came up just short of a perfect game against Fallbrook on April 28, as he allowed a leadoff walk, picked off the runner and then retired the next 20 in order, 14 via strikeout ... tossed a complete game in seven of his 11 starts ... was also stellar with the bat, hitting .364 with an area-leading nine home runs, 26 RBI and 33 runs ... added five doubles and was 25-for-27 on the basepaths to go along with a perfect fielding percentage ... went 7-1 with a 3.25 ERA as a junior, striking out 79 and posting a .381 average at the plate ... earned First Team All-County and All-League recognition in addition to being named the Avocado League Pitcher of the Year ... had a 7-1 record as a sophomore with a 1.10 ERA to earn League Pitcher of the Year laurels ... as a freshman, had a 4-1 mark on the mound with 28 strikeouts ... played for the 16U USA Baseball National Champion San Diego Show and for the Tampa Bay Rays Scout Team ... a Management major ... parents are Steve and Amy DeNato ... born March 17, 1992.
