    Sheldon Watkins is in his first season as an assistant coach for Indiana Baseball. Watkins primarily works with IU's hitters and outfielders, assists with recruiting duties, assists with field maintenance and coaches first base. He joins the Hoosiers after coaching for the previous four years in San Diego at the high school level.

    "Sheldon is a quality person and a hard worker," head coach Tracy Smith said. "He loves what he is doing and it shows. His enthusiasm and knowledge of the game are apparent to those around him every day. He has been a wonderful addition to our program."

    Watkins spent the previous three years as the associate head coach at Mira Mesa High School. There, he served as the third base coach, infield coach and hitting coach, as he helped Mira Mesa win the 2006 Eastern League Championship and advance to the 2006 California Interscholastic Federation quarterfinals. In 2007, Mira Mesa finished the season ranked sixth in San Diego County and advanced all the way to the CIF D-I semifinals and a final state ranking of No. 47.

    In addition to his work with young student-athletes on the field, Watkins also worked with them in the classroom, serving as a substitute teacher in the San Diego City Schools.

    Additionally, Watkins has worked with the San Diego County Senior Showcase, the Baseball Factory/Team One Showcase, the Tecolote Baseball Academy and served as the head coach for the San Diego Owls travel squad. He also was an assistant coach with the San Diego Gamers in the summer of 2007. Prior to joining Mira Mesa, Watkins also served as an assistant coach in the Tecolote Pony League during the spring and summer of 2004.

    Prior to joining the coaching ranks, Watkins played a year of collegiate baseball for the University of LaVerne in California and followed that up by playing summer ball with Athletes in Action. Watkins also played fall ball for Point Loma Nazarene University in San Diego, where injuries ended his playing career in 2002. Watkins graduated from Point Loma in 2004 with a bachelor's degree in sociology.

    Watkins and his wife, Chelsey, reside in Bloomington.
