Sycamores Knock Off Hoosiers
March 3, 2009
TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - Indiana State had five players with multi-hit games as the Sycamores bounced the Indiana baseball team, 11-2. Alex Dickerson had his fifth straight game with two hits or more, going 2-for-4 in a losing effort. ISU improved to 9-1 and the Hoosiers fell to 3-3.
Ryan Strausborger led the way for the Sycamores, going 3-for-6 with three RBI in the win, while four others bashed two hits apiece. David Gurbach was brilliant out of the pen for ISU collecting his first win of the season. Evan Crawford stole his fourth base of the season in the loss.
Indiana State got to the Hoosiers quickly, scoring three in the first and three in the second. The Sycamores got three hits in the opening inning, the big blow a two-run double by Luke Fieser to right-center field. ISU scored a pair of unearned runs in the second, as the Hoosiers committed a pair of errors on the infield. Ryan Strausborger came through with the big hit this time, delivering a pair of runs for the Sycamores on a triple to right center.
Indiana struck back in the top of the third with three straight doubles to start the frame. Unfortunately for the Hoosiers, on the first of the three, Tyler Rogers was thrown out on a brilliant relay while trying to stretch it to a triple. Cody Webber and Jake Dunning followed with consecutive two baggers to the gap in right center. But after Evan Crawford walked, Chris Hervey smashed a ball to short but it went for a 6-4-3 double play as Pascual Del Real started that twin killing.
The Sycamores scored a pair back in the bottom of the third, with both runs coming after two outs had been tallied. Back-to-back singles and a walk loaded the bases for ISU, and then an infield single by Strausborger and a bad throw by Webber on the recovery plated two to give Indiana State an 8-1 lead. IU got one back in the top of the fourth with the meat of the order doing the work. Alex Dickerson, Jerrud Sabourin and Kipp Schutz posted singles in the frame, the final one scoring Dickerson for a run with one down. Rogers drew a walk to load the bases, but Gurbach came out of the pen to strike out Webber and Dunning to end the IU threat.
Chris Squires and Gurbach continued to put zeroes on the board for their respective opponents. Squires worked 2 1/3 shutout innings, striking out one and scattering four hits. Gurbach was masterful, pitching the final 5 2/3 for the Sycamores, striking out eight, and allowing just three hits and a walk to pick up a save for ISU.
The Sycamores got a trio of insurance runs off Matt Igel, plating three in the sixth inning. A leadoff walk, two singles and then a two-run double by Bronco Lafrenz pushed the ISU lead to 11-2. Igel allowed three runs in 1 1/3 innings, but was followed by a strong performance from Marshall Gorham, who allowed just one hit in 1 2/3 in his Hoosier debut.
The Hoosiers will return to action tomorrow, when they take on Eastern Michigan. The game is slated for 3 p.m. at Sembower Field.
