STATESBORO, Ga. - After falling behind 8-0, the Indiana baseball team rallied to within three, but were unable to overcome the deficit, falling 8-5 to Georgia Southern. The Hoosiers (3-5) got the tying run to the plate in the seventh, eighth and ninth innings, but were unable to tie the contest against the Eagles (9-1). IU takes on No. 20 East Carolina on Saturday at the Holiday Inn Eagle Invitational.

After GSU opened up an 8-0 lead after the fifth, IU rallied for two runs in the sixth and three in the seventh. Indiana got its first two tallies off of starter Chris Mederos, with a Kipp Schutz sac fly and a Tyler Rogers double scoring a pair of runs. Then, after the Eagles went to the bullpen, the Hoosiers rallied again in the seventh.

With one out, Evan Crawford started the rally with a double down the left-field line. Chris Hervey was then hit by a pitch and Josh Phegley walked to load the bases. GSU then called on closer Kyle Kamppi to face Alex Dickerson, and the freshman responded by smashing the first pitch he saw into left-center field for a bases-clearing double. Jerrud Sabourin singled and Schutz walked to load the bags again for Rogers with one down. The second baseman crushed a liner toward the middle, but right at shortstop Brian Pierce, who caught the ball then went to second to turn two.

In the eighth, a Cody Webber walk and a Hervey HBP to bring Phegley to the plate with two outs as the tying run, but the junior fouled out to first to end the threat. In the ninth, reliever Dexter Bobo got the first two out, but a Schutz double, a Rogers walk and a Wes Wilson HBP loaded the bags once more. Jake Dunning then came up and hit a deep fly ball to right, but it was caught to end the game.

The Eagles got two unearned runs on just one hit in the second inning, then added four on starter Matt Bashore in the fourth. Joey O'Gara came on in the fifth to allow a pair of runs, but from there on the bullpen was lights out, shutting down a potent Georgia Southern offense.

Bashore fell to 0-2 with the loss, despite striking out five in his four innings of work. Mederos went to 2-0 by striking out eight Hoosiers, allowing six hits and four walks in his six innings. Bobo picked up his first save despite a hit, two walks and two hit batsmen in his two innings of action.

Crawford, Dickerson, Sabourin and Schutz each had two hits in the loss. Sabourin also walked twice to reach base four times for Indiana. Dickerson's three RBI led the way, while Chris Hervey scored two runs for IU.

The Hoosiers now take on ECU on Saturday at 6 p.m. in the next game of the Holiday Inn Eagle Invitational. Live stats and audio will be available on
