WINTER HAVEN, Fla. -
Aaron Slegers and Scott Effross combined to keep Navy (6-10) off the board as #24 Indiana (11-3) posted its second straight shutout with a 4-0 blanking of the Midshipmen. The Hoosier pitching staff has not surrendered an earned run in four consecutive ball games and lowered the team ERA to 2.01 through 14 games.
Slegers (2-0) set a new career high by punching out eight batters in 6.2 innings of shutout work. Effross added three more Ks to the team total closing out his third IU victory of the spring break trip. The freshman hurler no-hit Navy for the final 2.1 innings.
For the eighth time in nine games, the `hot start' Hoosiers scored in the opening frame. Kyle Schwarber got it started with a one-out single. Fellow 2012 freshman All-American, Sam Travis, followed with a double to place both Hoosiers in scoring position. Next was an RBI-groundball from Scott Donley, driving in his 14th run on the year.
Runs two and three came in the fifth when freshman second baseman Nick Ramos sent a one-hopper off the right field wall, scoring Dustin DeMuth and Casey Smith. The fourth and final tally of the evening was produced by DeMuth's cloud-scarping solo homer in the seventh.
The Cream and Crimson return to action on Friday, slated for a 3 pm game versus the Bucknell Bison. Tune into IUHoosiers.com for a live audio broadcast.
