Hoosiers Sweep Doubleheader at Florida A&M
March 17, 2007
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Jon Fixler and Andrew Means combined for nine hits and nine RBIs as the Indiana baseball team moved to .500 with a doubleheader sweep of Florida A&M on Saturday. Freshmen Matt Bashore and Eric Arnett each picked up a victory for Indiana.
In the opening game of the doubleheader, Fixler went 2-for-5 with 5 RBIs, including a go-ahead, bases-clearing double in the top of the ninth that gave IU a 5-3 lead. Bashore pitched 8 1/3 innings, allowing just four hits and two walks and striking out a career-high nine to improve to 2-1 on the season.
Trailing 3-2 in the ninth, Means led things off with a single to center and was advanced on a sacrifice by Sterling Mack. Ben Greenspan then lofted a fly ball to right, and the outfielder was unable to come up with the ball leaving men on second and third and just one out. The Rattlers elected to intentionally walk Haas, and then Evan Crawford struck out to bring up Fixler. On a 1-2 pitch, Fixler roped the Antonio Birch offering into center field and into the gap to score all three runners and put IU ahead by two.
Holding a 2-0 lead after three innings, Bashore pitched strong the rest of the way, but saw his lead cut in half when Corey McFadden lined a shot with nobody on over the left-field fence to make it 2-1. The Rattlers tacked on two more in the bottom of the eighth to take their first lead of the series. Darryl Evans and McFadden each got on and stole a base to give FAMU runners at second and third and one out. Adam Gordon then executed a successful squeeze to score the tying run, and a throwing error by Crawford scored the go-ahead run with two outs.
After allowing a pair of runs, one earned, in the first the Hoosiers rebounded with a seven-run fourth on six hits and a pair of Rattler errors. Seven different Hoosiers each had an RBI in the frame, with Greenspan getting two hits in the inning. Reid Briglia added his first career triple in the frame. Crawford and Fixler each had RBI singles in the fourth.
Indiana added a pair of runs in the top of the fifth after Means led off the inning with a single. Mack followed with a walk and both runners moved up on a Crawford sac bunt. Means scored on a wild pitch and then Mack scored on a loop single to center by Haas. FAMU scored a pair more runs in the fifth to chase Arnett from the game in favor of Doug Fleenor.
The Hoosiers added two more runs in the top of the seventh and one in the top of the eighth. Crawford delivered an RBI double and scored a run in the seventh, while Means manufactured a run with two outs in the eighth, reaching on a single, stealing second, moving to third on a wild pitch and being driven home on an infield single by Mack.
FAMU refused to quit, though, and got a three-run longball from Darryl Evans in the bottom of the seventh. In the bottom of the eighth, the rattlers got one more and had the bases loaded with one out, but Joe Vicini was able to get Evans swinging and force a flyout from Pete Guastella to end the threat. The Hoosiers added four insurance runs in the top of the ninth, two coming home on a single by Means.
Indiana is back in action on Friday, March 23, for the opening game of a three-game series against IPFW. First pitch on Friday is scheduled for 3 p.m. EDT.
