April 1, 2007
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana baseball team was topped in its series final against Michigan State, 6-1, on Sunday. Tyler Tufts went 2-for-3 with a walk in his first career appearance in left field. The Hoosiers are now 11-11 (1-3 Big Ten) while Michigan State is 11-9 (3-1) on the year.
Doug Fleenor got the start for IU, going seven innings, allowing eight hits, six runs, two earned, and striking out six as he was credited with the loss to fall to 0-2. John Dwan improved to 2-2 for MSU as he pitched seven shutout innings for the visitors.
The Spartans got on the board with a pair of runs in the first inning to take an early 2-0 lead. After Fleenor retired the leadoff hitter, a pitch inside got a piece of Brandon Doherty. Steve Gerstenberger followed with a single to right to move Doherty to third, and then Kyle Day drove home the first Spartan run of the day with a bouncing single through the right side. Chris Roberts followed with a sac fly to left to up the lead to two.
Neither team scored again until the fifth, when Michigan State got leadoff hitter Eric Friedland on with a single up the middle. Eric Roof then reached on a throwing error by Evan Crawford to put runners at second and third with nobody out. Fleenor got Dennis Jones to ground out and hold the runners, and then Doherty hit a sacrifice fly to center to score the first run of the inning. But MSU followed with three well-placed doubles in a row to plate three more and make it 6-0.
Tufts started things in the bottom of the eighth with a one-out single, and advanced to second on a throwing error by the second baseman as Keith Haas hit into a fielder's choice. Crawford followed with an RBI single to center to make it 6-1. After Andrew Means hit into a fielder's choice, Jon Fixler walked to load the bases. But Ryan MacFarlane was able to retire Reid Briglia on a groundout to end the threat.
The Hoosiers are in action again with a midweek game at Ball State on Wednesday. First pitch is slated for 3 p.m. EDT.
