GARY, Ind. - The Indiana baseball team jumped out to an 8-0 lead and never looked back in an 11-2 victory over Valparaiso (11-19) on Tuesday night at U.S. Steel Yard. Alex Dickerson and Josh Lyon each homered in the game, while Dickerson had three hits in the win for the Hoosiers (16-15).
Jerry Kleman picked up the win in his first career start, going three innings in a scheduled short outing. Austen Siwiec was carded with the loss to fall to 0-2 on the year. Along with Dickerson's three hits, Wes Wilson and Lyon each had two hits. Michael Earley, Jerrud Sabourin and Tyler Rogers each drove in two runs.
The Hoosiers struck first with a two-out rally in the first. Sabourin walked and Dickerson followed with a single, and after a wild pitch, Earley blasted a ball into center field for a two-run single. Lyon added a single of his own, but Rogers was retired on a comebacker to end the inning.
IU tacked on another two runs in the second to make it 4-0. Wes Wilson started the rally with a one out single and Micah Johnson followed with a walk to put two on with two out. Sabourin then ripped a double to deep left center to score both runs for his 33rd and 34th RBI of the season.
The Hoosiers then got their longball game going, with Lyon blasting a towering solo shot to left with one out in the third. In the fourth, Dickerson came to the dish with Ethan Wilson and Sabourin on the bases. The sophomore crushed a line drive to left up and over the wall for his Big Ten-leading 14th home run of the season. With the blast, he matched his 2009 season total and entered the school's single-season top 10 for the second straight year. He is now tied for 11th on IU's career list with 28 bombs.
On the mound, Kleman kept the Crusaders off the scoreboard with three hits and five walks allowed in his three innings. But Valparaiso left the bases loaded in both the first and the third and left two on in the second to stay off the scoreboard. New roster addition Alex Zerman then pitched the next two innings, surrendering three hits but limiting Valparaiso to just one run. Zerman, who the Hoosiers added from the IU club team to begin the week, struck out two in his Indiana debut.
Derek Roof pitched the sixth for the Hoosiers, allowing a run, while Jonny Hoffman tossed a pair of hitless innings. Mike McKinley wrapped up the game with a scoreless ninth to finish off the game. Indiana got a run in the eighth and two in the ninth, with Rogers posting a two-run single in the final frame.
Indiana is back in action for a three-game set against Iowa at Sembower Field this weekend. The Hoosiers and Hawkeyes will battle at 3:05 p.m. on Friday and at 1 p.m. on both Saturday and Sunday. Live audio and statistics will be available at IUHoosiers.com.
