MSU Seizes Another Walk-Off Winner
April 13, 2013
EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Indiana University baseball team was victimized by an extra-inning, walk-off defeat for the second time in as many days versus Michigan State (20-11, 4-4 Big Ten) on Saturday. Jimmy Pickens stroked his second game-winning hit of the weekend, a solo shot clearing the wall in right-center field to drop the #12 Hoosiers to 26-6 overall and 8-3 in Big Ten play.
Indiana dug themselves out of a 5-0 hole by plating runs in the seventh, eighth and ninth innings. A pair of defensive gaffes aided MSU to the five-run advantage with four unearned runs. The Hoosiers charged back in the latter stages, however, posting a three-run seventh and lone tallies in the subsequent two frames.
Casey Smith got it started, singling to lead off the seventh stanza. Freshman second baseman Nick Ramos then put Indiana on the board with a two-run homer. Consecutive singles by Chad Clark and Will Nolden followed to place runners at the corners. Clark sprinted in from third on a wild pitch, pulling IU within two scores at 5-3.
Clark kept contributing in the next inning, driving in Dustin DeMuth to shave another run off the Hoosier deficit at 5-4. With two outs in the top of the ninth, Michael Basil manufactured a walk after fouling off several two-strike pitches. He would come around to score moments later when a fly ball into left field was misplayed by the Spartan outfielder, dropping out of his mitt and knotting the score at 5-5.
The Hoosiers were retired in succession in the 10th though, setting the stage for Pickens to club another walk-off winner in the home half.
