No. 18 Hoosiers Top Michigan State with Walk-Off Win in Extras
April 19, 2014
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Casey Rodrigue's single in the bottom of the 12th lifted No. 18 Indiana to a 2-1 walk-off victory over Michigan State on Saturday afternoon at Bart Kaufman Field. IU pitchers Christian Morris, Jake Kelzer, Scott Effross and Luke Harrison combined to give up just one run on eight hits with seven strikeouts in 12 innings of work.
Harrison (2-0) was the winning pitcher for the Hoosiers as he pitched a perfect top of the 12th inning. Morris started for Indiana and surrendered just one earned run in 5.2 innings of work, giving up only four hits with three strikeouts.
Kelzer came out of bullpen with two outs in the sixth with Spartan runners on first and second in a tie game. He induced a groundout to end the inning and fanned two batters as he closed the seventh inning.
Effross then came on in the eighth and worked 4.0 innings without giving up a run while working around a few MSU threats into extra innings.
Indiana pitchers have gave up just one run in their last 32 innings pitched dating back to the final inning of the Morehead State game on April 13. Michigan State's run in the top of the sixth snapped a 25.1 scoreless inning streak by the IU pitching staff.
IU had a chance to score in its first at-bat in the bottom of the first. Rodrigue started the game with a single before later advancing to second a groundout by Sam Travis. Scott Donley then singled in the right field, but Rodrigue was gunned down at home as he attempted to score for the final out of the inning.
The Hoosier got on the board in the bottom of the fourth as Travis hit his second triple of the year with one out. Donley then got his second hit of the game as he popped an RBI-single just inside left field line to bring home Travis for IU's first run of the afternoon. Donley was thrown out at second trying to leg out a double for the second out.
IU continued to threaten in the fourth as Dustin DeMuth drew a walk before advancing to third as Brad Hartong reached on an error and ended up a second base. Will Nolden could not take advantage as he grounded out to first to end the inning.
The Spartans put some offense together in the top of the sixth, beginning with a one-out double by Anthony Cheky. Cheky then advanced to third on a balk by Morris. Blaise Salter then stepped up with an RBI single to center to tie the game at 1-1 as Cheky scored for MSU's lone run of the day.
Indiana loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the ninth starting with singles from DeMuth and Hartong. MSU reliever Anthony Misiewicz then intentionally walked Nolden to put three ducks on the pond. Misiewicz then struck out IU pinch hitters Ricky Alfonso and Austin Cangelosi to get out of the jam.
Effross found himself in trouble in the top of the 11th. MSU put runners on first and second with two outs thanks to a walk and an IU error. Effross and the Hoosiers then benefitted from an overturned call on a groundout to third base for the third out.
After Harrison's perfect top of the 12th, Nolden walked to lead off the bottom of the inning. Craig Dedelow put down a sacrifice bunt to get Nolden to second base. Chad Clark then hit a 2-2 pitch through the right side for a single to advance Nolden to third base. With the MSU infield and outfield all drawn in, Rodrigue hit a fly ball to deep centerfield to plate Nolden for the winning run.
The Hoosiers and Spartans will play the final game of the weekend series on Sunday, April 20 at Bart Kaufman Field with first pitch scheduled for 1:05 p.m. ET.
