Hoosiers Win Weekend Series Over Northwestern
May 8, 2011
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana Baseball's 8-2 victory on Sunday over Northwestern earned the squad its fourth series win out of six Big Ten weekends. The Hoosiers 27th win overall and eighth in conference play paired with a Penn State loss, puts them in a tie for the ever-important sixth place of the Big Ten standings. Only the top six teams advance to the Big Ten Tournament in two weeks.
Starting pitcher Blake Monar set the tone early, cruising through the first inning in just five pitches. He kept rolling all the way until the sixth when his shutout bid was ended with one swing of the bat. Jack Havey smacked a solo shot for Northwestern's first run of the game. The Wildcats would score twice in the inning to pull within a lone tally at 3-2.
Sound baseball for Indiana nabbed the first two runs. The Hoosier half of the third inning included a sacrifice bunt, stolen base and two hits with a runner in scoring position. Indiana's third run was gift-wrapped, thanks to a pair of Wildcat fielding errors in the fifth.
Chad Martin came on in the fifth and halted the Northwestern comeback. The 6-foot-7 righty completely shut down the Wildcat lineup, no-hitting them through his first 2.2 innings of relief. Northwestern's only hit off of Martin in his 3.2-inning save was a lead-off single in the top of the ninth. Martin faced 13 batters, retiring 11 of them.
Indiana then blew the doors open with a five-run seventh. Dustin DeMuth, Alex Dickerson and Wes Wilson each drove in at least one teammate. Dickerson's two RBI came after Micah Johnson was intentionally walked to load the bases for the reigning Big Ten Triple Crown winner. He made them pay by cracking a ball past a drawn-in infield.
Justin Cureton had a good day at the yard, going 2-for-2 with two runs scored, an RBI and sacrifice bunt.
The Cream and Crimson hop on the bus Tuesday, headed for Lexington, Ky., and night game against the Kentucky Wildcats. The non-conference battle is slated for a 6:30 pm first pitch and will be aired on the Big Blue Sports Network. Jeremy Gray will have the audio call on IUHoosiers.com and WHCC 105.1 FM as well.
